276 Indians abroad test positive for coronavirus: MEA

New Delhi, Mar 18: In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan updated about the number of Indians affected across the globe. In a shocking reveal, Muraleedharan stated that over 276 Indians have been tested positive for coronavirus overseas.

Iran has reported 255 Indians positive for novel coronavirus while the rest affected Indians were - 12 in UAE, 5 in Italy and 1 in Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Rwanda and Hong Kong.

The External Affairs Ministry officials had on Tuesday maintained that they could not confirm whether more than 250 Indians in Iran have tested positive for the virus but acknowledged that the ministry was aware of such a list of people being circulated.

"Of course in a situation like that, you will find some positive cases among the Indian pilgrims given the extensive spread of the virus in Iran," MEA additional secretary Dammu Ravi told reporters.

"Rest assured that every care is being taken by the mission in cooperating and coordinating with the government of Iran for the safety of Indians there. The ambassador is giving a lot of attention to them," he had added.

    Iran is paying the price for taking it lightly and not closing down its pilgrim centers immediately. I hope Government of India will take care not to bring this planeload of infection to India. It would be better if medical personnel are sent to Iran to take care of them.

    Surprisingly, absolutely no screening / testing of passengers flying into the US from India. We just walked out with our luggage!!
