Mangaluru, Mar 20: Deputy commissioner Sindhu P Rupesh said, "Everyone should follow self-isolation, quarantine, and avoid unnecessary travelling to stay safe.”

She was speaking at the ‘Meet the Press’ programme here at press club on Friday, March 20.

She also said," As of yesterday, over 1,000 people have been asked to be quarantined at home. We are keeping a track of all suspects which is important as well as difficult. When we suggest home quarantine, it is important to follow it compulsorily. Opting home quarantine and going out does not make any sense. If no symptoms are found in 14 days of home quarantine, then it is well and good.

“Home quarantine guidelines are also been distributed at the airport. But people concerned need to implement it with all seriousness. Social distancing is a must. Avoid unnecessary travel. Border sealing is one thing which is pending. We urge people to avoid crowd at OPD in hospitals. Only if there is any emergency, they can get treated. I request public to co-operate in this matter. If any positive cases are found in the district, we will look for total isolation facility and medical
preparedness,” she said.

When asked about pubs and gyms functioning in the city, the DC said, “If such cases are brought to our notice, we will inform the concerned department.”

City development cell officer Gayathri Nayak said, "Since January end, we are screening passengers at the port and airport and taking all type of preventive measures to tackle coronavirus. The passengers who undergo thermal scanning with no symptoms are advised to stay at home. If a passenger is found to have with cough and fever he will be taken to the hospital. As many as 14 days of home quarantine will be advised for the patient. If required, swab will be collected for lab test.

'We have trained Asha representatives to create awareness. They have done tremendously well in creating awareness among people. They have collected necessary information which was handed over to medical officer. There is a need of creating more awareness among the public. We have also coordinated with the city corporation to keep public places clean.

“Despite partial shutdown, we see people roaming around. Even a few government services have been stopped till March 31. It is not to create panic among public, but only as part of preventive measures to contain coronavirus,” she said.

District Working Journalist Union president Srinivas Nayak Indaje welcomed the gathering, journalist R C Bhat compered the event and general secretary Ibrahim Adkastala rendered the vote of thanks.

Health officer Rajesh and information officer Khader Shah were present.

The govt. must order a lockdown like Maharashtra. Karnataka has small numbers of people infected. But very soon it could become exponential

The Govt. and Administration is taking possible steps but the public is not behaving sensibly. They are so overconfident that they are not bothered about the well being of fellow citizens. Some stringent measures are required atleast for sometime to break the chain. People are still commuting between places which increases the risk of spread. I think we are still not looking at the graveness of the issue. All comutation related to work should be stopped immediately. We dont know what is the condition of the person sitting or standing in bus or train with you. It poses a threat of infecting several others without knowing.

Thank you for your advice Madam. Sad part is that the teaching community is pushed into getting infected since the schools are closed only for students and school teachers are stuffed into small rooms for meetings that can be avoided. Hope someone pays attention to this too.

Madam Sindu Rupesh. You are indeed taking a lot trouble to safeguard the interests of the people in Mangalore. It is indeed kind and thoughtful of you.

As a very senior citizen, may I request you to send your messages through media and try and keep away from people who some times are carriers of the disease. Thank you

Timely response by our DC and team and well appreciated. However I am of the opinion that face to face press conference must be stopped. Instead use the electronic media such as Skype etc. so that DC can sit in her office and communicate with the press and others and avoid the spread of coronavirus.

Very difficult task. Administration should start mobile hospitals to check these quarantined people every 4 days. Please provide masks, disinfectant, Hand gloves to their family's. Quarantine person cannot go out of his room. So some family member have to provide him food, Keep his plates cups soaps etc.. in separate place.

Gurkanna calm down... Tell me what is their fault if people throw waste wherever they want ! People just want to keep their houses clean that's it. Can these officers go behind each and every person or each and every street ? Sometimes garbage vehicle comes late due to do many unavoidable reasons. Even if they are late....they are coming. Why people have no patience? I have seen they just rotten parts of crabs/prawns just on the side of the road. Stray dogs/cats drag and spill everywhere. For this also govt officials should come and see? Tell me everyone had fridge or not? After cleaning prawns!/crabs/fish tie in a plastic and keep in fridge separately and give when garbage collectors come home. Or if you have compound dig and bury. We don't want to act like responsible citizen in the first place.... I have seen you have raised this issue in the past also. Still, we educated illiterate don't understand. Let's educate our people who act like ignorant.
