President Patil Makes History by Flying in a Sukhoi

Pune, Nov 25 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil created history by becoming the first woman president to fly in a fighter jet, the Sukhoi-30MKI of the Indian Air Force (IAF), here Wednesday morning.

The aircraft commanded by Wing Commander S. Sajan took off smoothly in the slightly chilly, but sunny early winter morning from the Lohegaon Air Force base on the outskirts of the state's IT and academic capital at around 10.55 a.m.

During the approximately 40 minute sortie, the aircraft would fly at an altitude of 10,000 feet at a speed of around 800 kmph or 0.9 Mach, but will not achieve the supersonic levels of around 1,100 kmph, an IAF spokesman said.

Shortly after her arrival at the air base, Patil - the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces - was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour by a smartly-turned out contingent of air-warriors donning the IAF colours of sky-blue shirts and black trousers.

Then, Patil, 74, had breakfast and underwent a mandatory pre-flight medical test and was found fit to undertake the flight.

After the medical test, she donned a G-Suit (anti-gravity suit) which helps the flier withstand high gravitational pressure by preventing excessive blood from flowing to the brain.

Besides the aircraft in which Patil travelled in the rear seat, two other Sukhois flew beside to enable her to experience what fighter jets look like in flight at that altitude and at such high speeds.

Just before the flight, the president asked for a glass of water, but later declined to drink, indicating her nervous but excited state of mind.

She stepped inside the aircraft at 10.35 a.m., assisted by some airmen even as the national and international media was present in large numbers to cover the historic event.

Present to witness the epoch-making occasion were Maharashtra Governor S.C. Jamir and Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik.

Ridiculous comments! What is wrong if Pratibha Patil flies a Sukhoi? I very much agree with Divya. How many of us, forget about women, even men have the guts to fly a Sukhoi? By 50 we cannot board a bus or travel more. Mind you flying Sukhoi is not as same as flyipng a Kingfisher or Air India Express. Should we belittle her because she is woman? Except for our first President, which other President has made any difference? How strong have they been? How strong was Kalam himself? He had charm around him which created kind of a publicity.

He spent time with students, most of the times, which raised him to the pedestal? But what was his contribution as the President? Did he initiate any change? For what Kalam will best be remembered for? As a scientist or President? I guess it is as scientist first. He was bound to be different as President and ought to be so, because he came from non-political background. He lived simple not because he was the President but he lived simple always. Did Indian politics take a bettter route during his tenure or did he make any conscious effort to change it? How many times did we come across Kalam admonishing or even advising political leaders about good governance? He did this only with masses and not with leaders. We feel happy to go along the current. Kalam was no doubt good, but his goodness in no way should be used to belittle someone. Every individual is unique and has the right to conduct life accordingly. Are we perennial cry babies?

These silly things happen only in India. They announce it as if they get medal for it. People are getting disgusted & tired. Look at the comments, Tax payers money, so true..Tax payer doesn't want his money being wasted this way. Mrs Patil can be a fashion Icon not a President, I mean what is she really doing. If she has free time (!!!)she can start campaign to bring about awareness among people regarding communal harmony.. Instead of arresting people when they break into Church or Temple or Masjid, bring awareness among them & educate them why is it not acceptable. Lots can be done when some ones in a leadership position. Indian politicians just waste their life around. Good for nothing. Very few are worth talking about.

It is interesting to note observations being made. Obviously our first woman president doesn't find many supporters. Looks like a lot of Indians have very high expectations these days. Everyone is looking for substance. Well, I am no big fan of hers, but for a nation where women are treated and regarded the way they are - Its an absolute wonderful symbolic gesture.

Especially coming in the wake of sexist, unfortunate and anti-social remarks by the Vice Chief of the Air Staff last week. It's ok to vent anger on leaders we do not appreciate - but once in a while -an elderly 74 year old lady who takes the step to fly the fighter jet - needs some appreciation. 74 yr old ladies in India remind me of temples, hospitals, grumbling noices, saas-bahu serials and osteoporosis. a 74 year old Indian lady taking this step is making a gesture. Lets chill n applaud. No point being hysterical. Just my opinion.

Mr.Abdul Kalam would not have gone for Sukhoi..had he been asked. President Pratibha Patil was in Indonesia on Holiday trip when Terrorists from Pak attacked Taj Hotel in Mumbai. She visited TAJ Hotel after finishing her good holdiays. Mr.Kalam would have cancelled his trip on the spot if he had been President when Taj was attacked.

Our President is supreme commander of the armed forces she has every right to experience a flight of her choice, I think instead of critisizing her We would appriciate her desire to fly in a military fighter jet at the age of 74 as a female co-pilot, i dnt think most of us will even be lucky enough to cross this age. However if am not wrong Su30MKI is one of the collaborated engineering of India with Russia to adapt BroMos so not to crib if its made in india or not, but certainly India can afford to have these birds in its Airfoce, is it not a great thing??where most of the other countries try but they dnt get the latest from Russia.some body has commented that she(President) is not on news so she is trying this,i dont agree,in our country's constitution PM has the most power and he/she is in news all the time, not the presedent. I agree with Liju

I agree with all the comments. I would like to add that Pratibha Patil was doing nothing and she wanted to do something so that she can be in the news (at least) for one day by doing something like this. Also, she wanted to remind us that there is somebody by the name of Pratibha Patil who (unfortunately) is our President, and gosh, she has entered the record books too. Ridiculous.

Co-pilot means just a passenger in a speeding sky-monster. One should not have weak guts. My deep Congrats to our active President Mrs. Patil!

I don’t find any mistake in Present's action. The one who cerise’s her action is just questioning her special privilege being as a Commander-in-Chief of all Defense Forces. The above comments against her found to be just ridiculous! I appreciate her attitude mingling with forces and checking their services.

Sukhoi, is it a Made in India fighter jet ? Did she piloted herself ? Any healthy old lady without ceremonial guard of honour, drinking two glasses of water could have gone for a stunt ride lest what purpose it served ?

It is very unfortunate that our respectable, responsible leaders are playing like little children when they can do so much for the welfare of destitutes & the development of the country. Most of the politicians are selfish, greedy & are with criminal records & the common people have to rely on the criminals & their leadership. Only almighty can save us.

Roland, you are so very right. On one side we are affected by floods which caused our taxed money to be paid in compensation and rebuilding and on the other the destructions of crops may compel us to import foodgrains. At a situation like this, these leaders are making unnecessary usage of fuel for three aircrafts for such a foolish journey. I indeed hope PC watches.

This is absolutely ridiculuos. Isnt this a waste of money? One side we have the finance minister trying to cut on government expenditure, and on the other side we waste money for unwanted things. Our President who has absolutely no "say" on matters relating to India's international issues is wasting tax payers money by undertaking trips abroad. I hope the finance minster is watching all this.

By virtue of her position as the President, she is the Commander-in-Chief of all Defence Forces. So now, is it the turn of Sonia Gandhi, who is the de-facto boss of the UPA regime, to try something more dramatic? I wish all our leaders and politicians devote their attention, time and energies to solving the problems of the people and the country. First and foremost, something must be done to root out corruption, prevent those elected on one party jumping to another party to contest on its symbol without any break, reform the electoral system and put an end to criminalisation of politics, even if it means banning all those facing criminal charges from contesting elections until being fully cleared!
