Mangalore, Nov 26:
“Students nowadays lack proper exercise, so they need to spend at least 30 minutes each day for sports activities to remain fit and healthy”, said Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes, principal correspondent, Deccan Herald.

Speaking at the inaugural of the decennial sports day celebrations of Lourdes Central School on Wednesday November 25 at Mangala Stadium, he said, “There is maximum need to enjoy sports or games alongside regular studies. Doctors in the city observed that 30 percent of students are obese due to non-involvement in sports or games activities”.

Quoting Mark Twain, father of American literature, who said ‘Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did do’, Dr Fernandes said that student life is to be enjoyed with involvement in sports which also helps keep the mind fresh.

“It is a wrong notion that those who play do not study”, he said and cited examples of top leaders and rank holders.

He advised students that winning or losing is a part of any game as even major players suffer losses. “But, continued efforts and strong faith will make you winners some day. In fact, failure is the first step to success”, said Dr Fernandes.

He declared the sports day open after he received the ‘torch’ brought by the sports leaders of the school. The chief guest hoisted the school flag after he was honoured in the march past led by the students’ team.

Fr Ajith Menezes, assistant parish priest, blessed the occasion. Grace Noronha, principal of the school, welcomed all. The students of the secondary and senior secondary section participated in various events.
