M'lore: Demolition of Mastikatte at Karangalpady Creates Chaos

Mangalore, Nov 28: The area surrounding Chandramouleeshwara Temple, opposite Karangalpady market here turned tense for a while on Saturday November 28 afternoon when members of the various saffron outfits joined in the agitating members of the management committee of the temple. The group was protesting the demolition of Mastikatte near the temple to facilitate concreting and road widening works being undertaken by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

An idol too is installed at Mastikatte with a peepal plant, which has a lot of religious significance. The demolition of the Mastikatte naturally irked locals. The labourers of the contractor, who has taken up the road works using a bulldozer, demolished the Mastikatte partially in order to resize the same for smooth concreting and road widening works. The management committee members witnessing the same complained to the deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj (DC), mayor Shankar Bhat and member of parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel.



As soon as the word spread, locals and members of the various saffron outfits gathered at the place and the situation turned tense. Police were deployed to control the situation. However, no undue incidents occurred until the arrival of the DC.

DC held a meeting with the temple management committee members on the temple premises. At the meeting the leaders alleged the demolition works taken up the labourers of the contractors in the name of road widening hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees worshipping the place. Further, they also alleged MCC of disturbing the sanctity of the area. The MCC engineer, who was present at the meet clarified that the portion of the Mastikatte was demolished only to resize it and make it convenient for road widening works.

At the meeting DC agreed to stop the work for time being to facilitate performing rituals that needs to be undertaken before resizing the Mastikatte. Further, he also said that only a portion of the road will be taken up for widening and the construction on the other portion will be kept pending to be taklen up for widening in the future date after due analysis.
 
Mayor Shankar Bhat, Mangalore south MLA N Yogish Bhat, member of parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP leaders Monappa Bhandary, Jagdish Shenava, Shrikar Prabhu and Vinay L Shetty were also present.

    I really don’t understand why people making so much mess. While making development plans certainly these things are quite common. Road widening is not related to any individual community or religion. It is for the development of city and nation. MCC should ensure that it is not granting permission to build any sort of religious icons on the public place in order to avoid any future problems related to religion. Peace and harmony is very essential to every individual irrespective of religion. It is unfortunate that sometimes some miscreants try to spoil the peace.

    We have not understood the true principles of our own religion! I too know the significance of a religious place.  We are a secular nation and 'OPEN MIND' is all that we need. Because God stays in our heart and not in any worship place. Religion never stops the development of its own people! And about Hindustan - I too am proud of my country and I am contributing my best for its people and their development as a student.

     India should be known as a developed democratic country and should be recognized as a world leader and not - for communal riots, corruption, Havala, terrorist activities, bribing law/government/police officials. All of us should support MCC to get rid of all illegal constructions including churches, shrines, temples, kattes, stoopas and all unnecessary structures which cause traffic jam and nuisance to public who pay taxes.

    We need more development and better infrastructure, is agreed. But demolishing a place of worship, be it any, is absolutely wrong! The mayor should have had enough knowledge in him to understand the consequences. Its a shame! Please respect all religions and the moral sentiments of the people. What kind of  leaders are you if you are not able to understand such a simple reflex action?

    Dear people of all religion at Mangalore please support MCC to undertake development works. We want a developed "Kudla" Few days back they did a good job at scrap market. So let us all cooperate and join hands with them. Let our MLA's and political leaders stand by them. Let us be positive in our thinking.

    It requires lot of courage to say that God does not require man-made structures, but humans do. May be it's time for religious leaders to discuss the new ways to cooperate with civil authorities so that developmental works go smoothly. When it comes to expansion of public roads, we need to be aware that religious leaders as well as Mosque, Church and Temple authorities must be open minded and extend maximum cooperation. Let the political parties not interfere too much.

    When all over the world people think how to make roads broad, we are still thinking how to make broad roads narrow. One temple,a mosque or church can prevent us from going ahead with a project which is good for the people.  At the place where I currently live, religious monuments are demolished every second to consturct not only new roads but even entire city. A mosque in which people offer prayer this evening does not exist when they come next morning. Entire land will be cleaned off all the monuments, buildings, mosques without any problem. No one is just bothered. But in our place, forget about demolishing temples, churches or mosque, even a broken window can create havoc and if not controlled bloody bath is unleashed within few hours. Wonder when we will be out of this vicious circle. Religion, religiosity is fine and needed for living. But I pity people who make their living by using religion and religious sentiments of commoners. We often talk about our cities not having good broad roads. But have we ever allowed to construct broad roads? Contractors have to be careful when they pass through these religious places. Should we call ourselves selfish or ultra-religious? Now be sure this road work will be kept pending for years without solution.
