RailTel donates Rs 2 cr to PM-CARES to fight Covid-19


New Delhi, Mar 31 (IANS): The RailTel, a public sector undertaking (PSU) of the Railway Ministry, here on Tuesday, donated Rs 2 crore to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation Fund (PM-CARES) from its corporate social responsibility fund for FY20 to combat the coronavirus infection.

"To support the noble cause of fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in India, RailTel has contributed Rs 2 crore to the PM-CARES fund from the CSR fund for FY20," it said. The RailTel employees have also donated their one-day salary amounting to Rs 15.5 lakh.

The RailTel handles communication system, video conferencing and implementation of e-office platform and also stores important data for Indian Railways at its data centres in Gurgaon and Secunderabad.

Talking about management of essential services, RailTel CMD Puneet Chawla said, "Following the central government advisory, majority of RailTel's works are working from home using e-office, ERP, HD video conference platform. But some of our team members are also working in the field to keep the network running.

"The safety of workforce is of utmost importance and we are taking all possible precautions for it."

The railways has suspended passenger, mail and express train services for March 24-April 14. It is only running special parcel and freight trains to ensure supply of essential items.
