Mangaluru bishop distributes food packets to 200 migrant labourers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Mar 31: The bishop of Mangaluru Dr Peter Paul Saldanha visited a shelter of migrant labourers at Hoige Bazaar and distributed food for them on Tuesday, March 31.

As many as 200 labourers, who in majority hail from Tamil Nadu, are stuck in these sheds after a 21-day lockdown was announced across India.

The bishop spent time with them and notified them the government rules during the lockdown period. He also requested them to maintain social distance. The bishop also visited the government destitute shelters at Nanthoor and distributed 200 towels. Same time, he made arrangements for one inmate whose hand was broken after he was beaten by a cop for violating lockdown rules. The bishop ensured that the inmate was admitted at Fr Muller Hospital for surgery and treatment.

Corrine Rasquinha, founder of White Doves Psychiatric Nursing and Destitute Home and its volunteers accompanied the bishop.

"District administration arranged food and essentials for migrant labourers, who are stranded in various parts of the city. Based on the request put forth by district administration, few social service organisations are helping in distributing food and essentials. As per request from the office of deputy commissioner, we visited few labour camps along with the bishop. Till 3 pm, we distributed food and visited the destitute. Bishop has informed us that he is ready to help district administration personally and will arrange 200 packets food every day," said Corrine Rasquinha.

Our good shepherd... Come on Bishop... Reach out to the people. He was serving the poor, downtrodden in the past also. Few months before we were at the bus stop in group...there was one old widow lady...if I have not mistaken her name is "Pushpakka". As we were talking she asked us where's Peter father ? We asked who? She was saying Peter father is working foreign... "aar Kinnigoly anchidaar". We understood and said "aar ithe bishop aather". She was so happy ...tears came out from her eyes and started saying that he is so kind .... when I was sick he admitted to the hospital for thyroid surgery. Everyday he used to come twice sitting beside my bedside bringing medicine and looked after me like his own mother. He himself was feeding me tender coconut water when I was unable to eat or swallow anything . All expenses of the hospital he only borne... though she had her married daughter. She said so many good works done by our bishop towards poor... God bless our bishop. Long may he live... Bishop, please do take care of yourself especially at this time when you meet the people... 🙏🙏

Very good initiative but please if possible provide them with masks also because wearing clothes there won't protect them it's a proven fact. And bishop even you should wear masks everytime as you guys are standing very close to these people. We don't know who has this virus and the last thing we want would be you getting it. Stay safe God bless you. Jai hind

Great job by bishop in times of crises in this hour of need especially during Lent , may the almighty lord our God bless you and keep you in good health

Prayer for god's mercy in this time of crises ( source divine retreat centre)

Almighty and merciful God, you assure us that your hand is not too short to save, nor your ear too dull to hear our prayer (Isaiah 59:1). You have revealed that you are ever attentive to our supplications. Your children are under the grip of fear because of the fast spreading corona virus pandemic in the different parts of the world. Send the power of your Word and calm the storms of fear and desperation. Father God, take authority over this present crisis that your children may live in peace and security.
You are the Lord who heals us. Heal those affected and strengthen their afflicted families. Give courage, protection and comfort to the medical personnel taking care of the sick. May your grace and comfort surround the dying and may their souls rest in peace.
Holy Spirit, give wisdom and guidance to the scientists doing research that they may develop an effective medicine to combat the sickness speedily. We pray for the government authorities that they may take appropriate steps for the good of the world.
Lord Jesus, we remember you said “God so loved the world that He gave His only son that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). With the apostles we cry out to you, “Lord, save us, we are perishing” (Matthew 8:25).
Let not this present crisis lead your children to fear and gloom; let them rather turn their hearts to you, finding their hope in you who is our refuge forever and ever. Amen

Benjamin De Souza Puttur,in such hard times need not always rich people but everyone who can too help provided they are healthy. Here in Germany since sick ,old people are at home, volunteers, social workers go for them shopping ,keep them at the door ,and help ,naturally without any pay.Money will be given for shopping when they come in cover or in hand.Neighbours too can help.It is of course a big help to these daily wagers when someone gives them a meal a day.I believe they dont get any help from govt when they dont work.so it is a noble deed from Bishop and Madam Corina who help him.

Thank God we have people who are ready to help the less privileged. Good the police were not there and trying to disperse the crowd saying that social distancing is to be maintained. Hope tomorrow no saffron groups criticize the Bishop for conversations. The district administration should learn from people who help not make crazy decisions.

It is a beautiful and humanitarian gesture from the part of our Bishop to feed the hungry at this crucial juncture...Public witness and model to others. It is a happy note to see that so many organizations are coming forward to feed the hungry who are destitute or wanderers. Thanks to Mrs Corrine and her team for accompaniment.
