'India First' should be the govt motto: Congress on Trump remark

New Delhi, Apr 8 (IANS): The Congress has slammed the Centre for "cowing to the threats of retaliation by the US President" on supply of hydroxychloroquine, which is out of stock in the retail medical shops.

The party said it is with the government on 'India First'.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera sought to differentiate between the language used by Brazilian President, which it said was "polite," and that of US President, which it found "threatening".

"India believes in helping others, but before taking any decision, 'India First' should be the motto of the government," said Khera. He gave the example of Indira Gandhi during the Bangladesh liberation war when she had categorically told the US that "Indian interests are foremost."

"Trump threatened India by asking the country to lift the ban on export of 'hydroxychloroquine' (the key salt said to be effective against coronavirus). Whether Trump has passed the test in this hour of crisis is not our business to comment on. The question whether we should have immediately buckled under pressure is something about which history will judge us," Khera added.

The Congress said the government should first look at India's requirements and shortage of essential items.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal too had hit out at the Prime Minister on Tuesday for lifting the temporary ban on hydroxychloroquine.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor and Jaiveer Shergill have criticised President Trump's alleged threat to retaliate in case India did not supply the drug requested by the US.

The total cost of the US asking that drug is $2.9 million.
India can produce that drug the quantity US asked within 15 days as it has enough supply and cases of Malaria at the moment are low.
But, if US immediately stops H1B visa validity with immediate effect, citing national interests,( as US is in State of Emergency currently which is State of War )that costs India just $ 30 Billion. in one year.
Moreover, India has to make immediate preparations to take back all the H1B holders for repatriation, as they did during World War 2, for all Japanese nationals.
India should have self Interest and same is vice versa.

    Congress politicizing the issue..
As per internet, hydrocloroquine is not a remedy for corona virus.
Lot of side effects. And need to be administered under medical supervision.

Let them take some tablets, no tension 😅

For the time being, prevention is the only remedy for cure..
    So take enough precautions

USA is supposed to be the most powerful and developed country of the world and yet it is strange that its medical companies are unable to manufacture the very simplest drugs like Paracetamol and hydroxychloroquine, and asked India to lift the ban on the exports of medicines and allow America to import the above medicines. President Trump even threatened retaliation if India does not agree to lift the ban. Can we still call America a Super power? And again the action of India to lift the ban and allow exports is raising so many eyebrows. The main question remains unanswered till this date ...is America really un capable of producing the required medicines ?

Hydroxychloroquine is medicine for Malaria ....US does not manufacture it because US don't have known Malaria cases...

Why cant US manufacture them than asking India to supply? ....Simple answer it takes time to build manufacturing unit....and US needs it NOW...not after a month or two...

Manufacturing hydroxychloroquine is nor 'Rocket Science' ...any country can manufacture it within a month...

India should export it to US only if we have excess....US has 29 Million doses of hydroxychloroquine already...it thinks it need more because there is a POSSIBILITY it protect people from CORVIS-19...

    ...Tak...Takk...

I understand just as India is first for us, for Trump it's USA first, but that doesn't give him right to issue threats just to cover up his blunders, he'd better know his limits. Needless to say, he got away with his threats though..
