Bring stranded workers in Middle East home: Rahul

New Delhi, Apr 15 (IANS): Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the Union Government to bring back the workers stranded in the Middle East where they are left out of work. He said thousands of Indian workers are in deep distress and desperate to return home and the government should bring them back and put in mandatory quarantine.

Rahul Gandhi said, "The Covid-19 crisis and shutting of businesses in the Middle East have left thousands of Indian workers in deep distress and desperate to return home. The Govt must organise flights to bring home our brothers and sisters most in need of assistance, with quarantine plans in place."

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Supreme Court on Monday that there are 13 million Indians - including NRIs and students stranded abroad and the government is seeking to minimise the severe risk posed by arrivals from an increasing number of countries affected by Covid-19.

The government has urged the Indian nationals to stay put where they are to contain the further spread of the virus within India and allow the health machinery to focus on domestic containment effectively. In the UK, there are about 400,000 Indian nationals, including about 50,000 students. The UK government has now extended visas till May 31 and has issued necessary guidelines.

"However, given the present situation of the coronavirus outbreak in India and the available limited resources, it is not feasible to selectively evacuate Indian citizens from abroad when a large number of them from a number of countries want to return back due to various reasons," said the MEA in its reply to the Supreme Court.

In the beginning of February Ministry of External Affairs has said that India can consider evacuating Pakistani students from China, if Imran Khan government makes a request. Imran Khan-led Pakistani government has chosen not to evacuate its students from the country due to stop the spread of pandemic virus while India choose to air lift all the students got stuck in Wuhan province of China. This is probably first confirmed reports cases to India when they arrived in Kerala.

The UAE has said it would review labour ties with states refusing to repatriate citizens after the ambassadors of India and Pakistan said their countries were not yet ready to do so.

Bangladesh Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmed said Dhaka was working to alleviate citizens’ hardships, including sending money to foreign missions “so that migrants in trouble can be taken care of”.

A Philippines official said citizens overseas can qualify for a government stipend of $200.

The Supreme Court Monday observed that Indian citizens stranded in various countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic should "stay where they are".

Every Indian mission charges the fees in Middle East for their welfare. But when it comes distress of overseas workers, neither Embassies nor Ministry of Foreign Affairs proactive extending the helping hand.

Only prior to election for raising funds overseas workers are remember by the BJP government. Now charities are struggling to feed the workers when Indian mission has no clue of the reality.
Supreme Court of India says "stay where they are". Now they are at the mercy of God.

It is good to give suggestions. He is doing his bit. It is the duty of the great Modiji with his countless army of govt servants, govt machinery and civic resources to listen to the rational suggestions and find out a plan to implement.
Why else do we have an elected government if the citizens are also required to provide solutions? Or are such leaders only there to give bhashan and community circus of thali, tali & diya?

Modiji should quit twitter. He needs to face the media like Rahul Gandhi does. Its governments responsibility to help its citizens. Opposition only can ask question or request the government to help the citizens.

There is big problem with this establishment. They do not like anybody giving suggestions because they think that they know better. When Corona threat was world over when Opposition leaders cautioned them it was ignored. They went with the event "Namaste Trump" which was far more important than Corona and everything was done meticulously including building the wall in record time. They thought Corona will wait.

When first Corona case was detected on 30th January 2020, they still waited and allowed lakhs of people to enter India without proper screening. Opposition leaders have been cautioning them for economic stimulus for the Indian companies so that China should not take over. They have ignored this suggestion as well. Regarding migration workers similar advise was given to the government but that was also ignored as well. Now bringing back the Indians from Gulf Countries they do not have any detailed blue print.

We know the consequences of all the above . Extended lockdown, miserable condition of migration workers, poor preparedness of health department (still proper PPE are not made available for majority of them).

Modi and his followers are very allergic to the word Gandhi and make fun even in serious matters. This is the mind set and nobody can change it.

There are lot of low-level labors in Gulf countries without job, food and wanted to come back due to their sponsor totally ignored them. The government should bring them back as soon as possible same as the government arranged special flights for the foreigners who got struck in India. NRI are back bone of our country, they had played a huge role in developing our economy.

Majority or almost all Indians in Gulf countries are not residents or local citizens. Working on temporary work visa. Mostly are poor and do not keep earnings with them. Regularly send all earning back to family in India. So it is the responsibility of the Government to bring them back to India like the way India did in 1991 Gulf war.

Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai . Partially agree with you. Congress should appoint someone who can tutor RaGa on what to speak and when. His comments actually strengthen Modi . The election results are in front of you. His fleeing to Wayanad and winning on Muslims votes is an eye opener for the Congress to pull socks up and introspect.

    Yes please do the needful.

UAE is likely to pose work visa restrictions in future for those countries who donot take back their stranded citizens.

They have cleared they ll send only those who test COvID 19negative.
Then India also should cooperate. We already reached 11000+ these stranded 300-500 persons should not make a difference.

Because of virus please donot spoil the bilateral relation with good nation

Madam, with all due respect, what do you mean by "We already reached 11000+ these stranded 300-500 persons should not make a difference."
Are you serious ? Do you know how many people one person can infect?
Due to lockdown we are in manageable position today and we don't want things to go out of control.
Moreover we all remember how people came from abroad with seal in their hand behaved irresponsibly. Enough damage has already been made.
Our priority should be survival first, international relation comes latter.

Mr Gandhi is absolutely right on this matter.

The Governments in the Middle East have been doing all they can to convince the Indian Government that many want/need to go back to India.

If the Indian Government does not take appropriate action, it might be a problem in the future.
