Attempts to muzzle IANS attack on freedom of Press, urge GoI for stern action: Mahaldar

New Delhi, Apr 15 (IANS): The attempts to muzzle IANS or any other media organizations are not only criminal but an attack on the freedom of the Press, according to Satish Mahaldar, Chairman, Reconciliation, Return & Rehabilitation of Migrants.

In a statement, Mahaldar said the attempts to muzzle IANS or other media organizations are not only criminal but an attack on the freedom of Press.

"Such acts should not only be condemned but also held accountable for their anti-democratic activities. We urge GOI stern action should be taken against such miscreants," he said.

"The acts of intimidation by certain elements against the reputed news service, Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) is highly condemnable. Its subscribers and journalists are being threatened for its reportage on the issue of Tablighi Jamaat spreading the coronavirus infection", Mahaldar said.

As the threats were persisting, IANS has been forced to file three criminal intimidation cases against Individuals who claim to be the members of Tablighi Jamaat, he added.

Condemning the attack on freedom of Press, Mahaldar said in these difficult times when people associated with essential services like Media, Health workers and police are doing everything to save the people, certain vested interests are trying to bring harm to them.

The Media, doctors ,police & all such front line soldiers despite all the risks, has been tirelessly working hard to keep the people informed & are combating Covid 19 pandemic .

The responsibility to disseminate news in an atmosphere where rumour mongering and fake news is trying to whip emotions is more challenging. There have been attacks on media personnel by those hit hard by the truth which should be condemned by all, Mahaldar added.
