Mangalore, Jan 3
: The eminent Aloysian Alumni Awards were presented to five proud alumni of St Aloysius College at seminar hall, AIMIT, St Aloysius Management and Information Technology campus at Beeri near Kotekar in Ullal on Sunday January 3.

Veteran litterateur Dr Amruth Someshwar, retired Lt General Biddanda Changappa Nanda, NRI entrepreneur Lawrence D’Souza, scientist from BARC in Mumbai Dr Stan D’Souza and Capt John Prasad Menezes, marine engineer and former president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce were conferred the award at Aloysian Conclave organized by AIMIT St Aloysius in association with Aloysian Partners from North America (APNA) and Aloysian Partners International (API). St Aloysius Institutions rector Fr Joseph Rodrigus felicitated the five eminent personalities in the presence of Fr Denzil Lobo, director of AIMIT.

Dr Amruth Someshwar delivering the annual Aloysian lecture on the topic cultural heritage of the district said that Tulunadu has inherent culture of hospitality and welcomes everyone irrespective of their caste and religion. The region since long is known to harbour trade and traders including that of those offshore, he said.

When the rich heritage of the city is taken into consideration, the contributions of the Basel Mission and the Catholic Christian institutions to the district are the most vital. The social service undertaken by the Christians as a mission and with discipline is a model for others, he said acknowledging the service by the educational institutions in the city and particularly Fr Muller’s service to the society through hospital.

For the society to sustain, bridges that link people are the need of the hour and not walls that separate them, said Dr Someshwar adding the too much belief in religion, country or language will lead to negativity, thereby sowing the seeds of disturbance in communal harmony in the district as well as the country.

Joe Gonsalves, chairman of organizing committee of Aloysian Conclave welcomed all. Lona Gonsalves presented a devotional song at the beginning of the programme. Alumni N G Mohan, Santhosh Kumar Kadri, Allen Colaco, Austin D’Souza and Winston D’Souza introduced the guests.

Neil D’Souza, an alumnus was the master of ceremony and Prof Edmond Frank proposed the vote of thanks.

I saw the comments from Asif and Shabbir of the 2004 batch. These are the loyal and sincere alumni of recent times. Shabbir and Asif we have common bonding and that is our Alma Mater even though I am an ancient Aloysian having completed my college in early forties. SAC has changed considerably and the new campus at Beeri is comparable with any campus in U.S.A. I too am proud to be and Aloysian. Our award event went of well. I had the pleasure of welcoming the guests and chief guests. The Beeri campus has come up at great cost and we ( by this I mean you and me included) have an obligation to help and support the institution for our being what we are today. Let us pool our ideas and try and support This great institution to the best of our abilities. Joe Gonsalves
