Mangaluru rationalists come together to dispel taboo around solar eclipse

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SHP)

Mangaluru, Jun 21: Aid Without Religion Trust along with Dakshina Kannada Rationalists' Association celebrated the solar eclipse which was visible across the country in various degrees on Sunday, June 21. The impact of the eclipse across the coastal region was felt from 10.30 am to 11.30 am. With social distancing in place, people gathered to observe the phenomenon at the Mangalore City Corporation swimming pool.

"While others look upon the eclipse as a catastrophe and disaster waiting to strike, we rationalists look upon it as a natural occurrence to be viewed and enjoyed," said president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, Narendra Nayak.

"Every time an eclipse comes around we make it a point to enjoy the same and also break the taboos associated with it. While Mangaluru streets are empty with people staying indoors with even temples being closed, we always manage to expose ourselves to the sun as much as possible, particularly during eclipses," he said.

"During the annular eclipse of December 2019, we had even exposed ourselves to the sun in the swimming pool to show that nothing will happen. Each one of us who did expose that time is hale and hearty. That itself goes a long way to break the taboo around the eclipse. This time too we wanted to recreate the celebration we conducted during the 2019 eclipse, however, due to restrictions amid the pandemic it was impossible. Therefore, a few families decided to conduct the event in a discreet manner while adhering to social distancing. We gathered in front of the swimming pool at around 10 am. Though the physical distancing norms were to be maintained the same is not applicable to members of the same family, " he added.

Dr Krishnappa Konchady with his wife Sunanda, the Prabhus-Narahari and Sushma with their children Kartik and Sonali, Pushparaj Boloor with his son Gaurav, a Class 6 student. Arun, Vivek and Mayoor from the Article 51 Ah club, Shyama Sundar Rao, Hariyappa Pejawar from the Aid Without Religion Trust and the managing trustee Narendra Nayak along with his spouse Asha were present.

Although the weather caused issues, all those who were gathered managed to have a glimpse of the eclipsed sun, with the help of specialised glasses.

"We also made a point to consume food under the eclipsed sun, something we have been doing for decades to dispel the superstition around eating during an eclipse which is said to cause all sorts of diseases," Nayak said.

Yes this us totally untrue as I myself have experienced the eclipse earlier inspite of being told and I am fit and fine and doing good. Education has taught you all that this is science and we have to about our daily duties. In case you are working in gulf would you sit at home on loss of pay or in Singapore tell your boss its eclipse and not coming to work....

If you check stories of yore....
1.You will always find stories of' Non believers ' becoming ' Believers '...
It is only because of these non' s that the Believer's have become famous.
2.I agree with some here that it is for a 2 minute glory this whole Naatak us enacted.
Relating to point no 1 I too know of at least 1 story which changed the life of a non believer.
Too much of anything is too bad.
You don't believe , fine. No need for a show.

We could notice that two of the Kannada channels were telecasting almost on full day basis from 3 days before eclipse, bringing in various astrologers, forecasting disasters.

I think they will now sleep till next eclipse. Unfortunately these channels dont have national coverage of news. They manufacture news and telecast. If not, they will keep on repeating sentences after sentences in different ways, changing noun to pronoun, adjective, verb etc, back and forth to kill time. Surprisingly these channels still survive because of advertisements going on.
Probably they think that all viewers are uneducated and they can go on publishing fake news and fake beliefs.

Let these rationalists continue to view Solar Eclipses until their RATION gets over. Such individuals are out for that 2 minute fame blissfully ignorant that they in fact are making a laughing stock of themselves.

Our ancestors were very wise people. They learned by experience. Whatever they did and practised might have a definite reason which I feel sometimes is beyond our capability in rationally understanding of the underlying facts.

I really don't know if there is any health or Dharmic issues will occur with the Solar Eclipse nor I have interest and time to go after it which is once or twice in a year occurrence.

But, I have a very strong reasons to follow age old customs in which we fast for about 5 to 6 hours. After the eclipse we remove all the old cooked food from home ( reason to clean the refrigerator), wash the house, clean all the utensils including the prayer room, remove the bed spread and put a fresh one. Fresh food is prepared after the cleaning process , light the fresh lamp and family together have a meal and discuss the experience. So, what is harm in this belief other than something good.

Moreover, it is part of nature worship where the seekers are mourning to the Sun being eclipsed and I would like to see it as the gratitude shown to the sun who is the only source of energy to the whole planet.

the rationalist with their agenda to seek attention go after some small issue where the repercussions are not much. have these rationalist tried to work on something pertaining to mindless exploitation of planet in the name of science and economy ? India is a land which respects all kind of views as along as it don't harm so , long way to go and in last what ever years they are trying to seek this attention they could run their trade with handful of people and the contrary are building up more.

Agree ..I don't see any issues with the customs being followed ..its about cleaning and maintaining hygiene .. and ultimately its meant for good health.
The problem is with the astrologers who make a quick buck by selling fear and then offering solution to swindle money from innocents..
The Rationalists are another extreme ..they often are attention grabbers themselves ..they think that people do not know that its the moon that is blocking the earth and the sun ..,in DK and udupi even a small worm would know this ..The so called rationalist do not into deeper aspects of nature ..unless it is written in some science book.
These rationalist also often have one set of rules for one community and another for the convent educated ..these rationalist are backed by some vested interests from the minority religions to demean hindu age old beliefs which are in tune with nature and is ultimately aimed at good health and hygiene of every human on this earth

Sameer, Thokkottu, lets agree that if the Thokkottu bridge develops cracks, its probably because they broke a coconut on it. Offering some prayers at Naganakatte might repair the bridge. Lets not discuss about Pumpwell and Padil. They will create a history of their own.

The amount of radiation is highest during the solar eclipse. It is not to dispel taboo around solar eclipse but to loss the eye sight. In the picture most of them are watching without protective eye glasses. It is a foolish idea.

Sir viewing eclipse without protective glasses are harmful to eyes. This observation is science and medicine, the rays emitting from sun and which we can see without pupillary constriction (because there is no bright light so eyes can self-protect itself via s reflex in normal cases) can harm the retinas highest visual acuity point called macula- that lead to macular degeneration.

And how do you know the birds and animals are directly looking at sun during the eclipse? The animals are far more intelligent and they might also have adaptive mechanisms (since they living right under the sun for most of the time- without exploring these things and ignoring the ancestors wisdom is not a correct move.

No birds will directly look at the sun only foolish human(Charbie Jasthi ayinakulu) look at the Sun directly.

Scientifically it is proved that directly looking at the sun causes retinal damage and you know that retina will not pain due to no pain nerves in the retina. So the damage process is painless. Professor Narendra Nayak is a scientific man should have warned these people regarding the protection of eyesight.
