M'luru: Kadri-Kambala corporator Manohar Shetty goes down to clean manhole, earns praise from public

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Jun 24: While workers these days hesitate to get inside a manhole, a corporator boldly got down into one to clear stagnated water. The act has garnered the corporator a lot of praise.

Kadri Kambala ward corporator Manohar Shetty who is otherwise seen among well-dressed corporators is the one who carried out the work.

Rainwater had stagnated in the stormwater drain on Kadri Kambala road causing problems for commuters. The workers had refused to climb down the nearby manhole to solve the problem. Meanwhile, corporator Manohar Shetty got down inside the chamber and explained the problem to the workers. However, even after this, the workers were adamant to not get down the manhole. To provide quick relief for the issue on hand the corporator obtained a set of spare clothes from his residence, went down the chamber himself to clear the trash which was leading to the stagnation of water.

Resolving the problem successfully, corporator Manohar Shetty has become an amazing example of how a people representative should be and can be.

When his dedication and sincerity in his duties is appreciated, there are some norms and professional responsibility and guidelines being defined in everyone's job category. The corporater can do other services to help people of his ward in so many ways. It is always better that only the experienced people carry out this type of menial jobs. Here precaution is better than a cure. May God bless him for performing his duties always?

    Flavian,
    Very true.
Most important question is : Aren't they supposed to use modern methods to clean manholes, drainage systems, septic tanks without actually getting into them in the first place?
People carelessly throw everything in the drainage systems, without considering the consequences.
There is no culture of responsibility among most Indians until now.
Swachh Bharath etc., was nothing but propaganda tool of cheap Indian politicians.
    Jai Hind!!

I appreciate his efforts and self determination on emergency and in need of situation.
Please do not crown him with political party. He has been elected by people as people's representatives. He must serve the constituency. He is a public servant and he has exhibited today. From my side, "WELL DONE MR. SHETTY, GOD BLESS YOU"

Absolutely shocking and irresponsible act of the corporator! Corporator is there to get the work done and not do it himself, that too such a dangerous task. Going inside the manhole without experience can be fatal. These kind of stunts should be avoided.

Arun mangalore, people like you find always some or other problems.A corporator doesnt mean he should sit there and let others work.He is a person who works and thats your problem.Danger is everywhere.when he could first findout what was wrong then he can simply try to engage people who knows it.Not wait until whole mangalore is under water.Appriciate atleast he is engaged in city problems.Take his example.Super job.Corporator.

The labourers were right in their place since the ADMIN is not providing the proper PPE for the assigned task or adopt the latest technology ! As a result the corporator himself get into the business and feel the pain. Next time he will be address the workers problems in the meeting with the experience which will be more effective.

I am not questioning the moral but want to know the reality.

    1. How can corporator go in the manhole without proper protective personal equipment like a mask, gloves, and full gown/plastic cloth?
    2. Is this manhole is meant for only rainwater or sewer drainage too?
    3. How can corporate workers deny the administration to do the allocated job?

It looks like a great job, but .....GOK........

Since workers didn't do their Job, corporator had do in this unavoidable circumstances.
But it's not the permanent solution.
Corporator can't go everywhere and do the job of workers. Its not his job.
He should be given powers to punish the culprits. If he has power, then workers will listen to him.

This corporator, Mr. Manohar Shetty is like a breath of fresh air in a contaminated and rotten atmosphere. He deserves all praise and our gratitude for rising to the occasion. I am sure the residents of his area will reward him with a higher position when the next elections are due. And certainly such people deserve it.
Compare this with a corporator in one of the suburbs of Mangalore as well as an MLA under whom the corporator falls. Both seem to be absconding and are nowhere to be found or heard of. Both were silent during the lockdown and are silent even now. Both of them have a lot to learn from the likes of Mr. Manohar Shetty. They were elected in Modi's name and the electors clearly must be regretting their decision.
