Beltangady: Robbery baffles people - Family members tied up, ornaments looted

Beltangady, Jun 26: A shocking robbery happened at Neerachilume in Kalmanja village in the taluk in the early hours of Friday June 26.

A gang of masked robbers raided a house and took away cash and ornaments worth several lacs of rupees. This robbery has shaken coastal Karnataka where such robberies are uncommon.

On Friday morning, the gang of robbers raided the house. It is said that owner of the house, Achuth Bhat, came out on hearing the sound of dogs barking. As soon as they gained entry into the house, they flashed their arms, and tied up the family members. Thereafter, they robbed the gold ornaments and cash from the house before escaping.

As per an estimate, 40 sovereigns of gold ornaments, one kilogram silver items and Rs 25,000 in cash were robbed. The total value of items so taken away has been put at Rs 13 lac. The house owner, Achuth Bhat, operates a areca nut business at Ujire.

Dharmasthala police who inspected the spot of crime have registered a case.

Such robberies are very rare in Beltangady and surrounding areas. People are apprehensive about this incident. The people are also curious to know whether the robbery was committed by locals or people who came from some other place.
