Pravin Mahajan Dies Four Years after Killing Brother

Mumbai, March 3 (IANS) Pravin Mahajan, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 for killing his elder brother and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, died in a Thane hospital Wednesday evening after remaining in coma for three months, hospital authorities said. He was 50.

Pravin Mahajan was admitted to the Jupiter Hospital in Thane following a brain haemorrhage Dec 11, 2009, when he was on parole He had been in coma since then and was put on life support system but failed to recover, a close aide of the family said.

A spokesman for the Jupiter Hospital said his condition deteriorated sharply Monday.

"His condition became critical since the past 48 hours, his blood pressure fell, kidneys stopped functioning and even his other vital systems deteriorated and failed," the spokesperson told mediapersons at the hospital.

In a dramatic murder that shocked the country, Pravin Mahajan shot his elder brother Pramod Mahajan on April 22, 2006, in his Mumbai home. The high-profile BJP leader succumbed to his bullet wounds 11 days later on May 3.

Shortly after committing the crime, Pravin walked down to the Worli police station and surrendered with his weapon.

Pravin Mahajan was sentenced to life by a sessions court for fratricide on Dec 18, 2007. He was in the Nashik Central Jail and was on parole on medical grounds when he suffered the stroke.

He was released for 14 days Nov 27, 2009, and was due to return to jail Dec 12. But around 10.30 p.m. Dec 11, he was rushed to the Jupiter Hospital following fatigue, giddiness and severe headache, later diagnosed as a massive brain haemorrhage.

He was kept under the care of a team of specialists, including a physician, neurologist, neurosurgeon and a cardiologist.

After a long battle lasting nearly 80 days, Pravin Mahajan died around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Pravin Mahajan's family, including wife Sarangi, twins - son Kapil and daughter Vaishali - and other relatives had gathered at the hospital Wednesday.

The hospital has written to the police and prison authorities regarding further instructions on conducting an autopsy.

"We will wait for their reply. If they want to do an autopsy, we shall do it, if they want us to hand over the body, we shall do that accordingly," the hospital spokesperson said.

Hospital authorities added that six doctors were beside Pravin Mahajan before his death Wednesday.

"We also used to send a daily medical update on his condition to the police and other concerned authorities," the spokesperson said.

Referring to a possible dispute over the payment of medical expenses for Pravin Mahajan, the hospital said it would discuss the matter with his family or the government.

In January, Pravin Mahajan's wife Sarangi had appealed to the state government to bear the cost of her husband's stay in hospital since the family could not afford it.

However, the government declined to bear the medical expenses.

Dear Shanthi and all, we are no one to say that person has to die. Everyone has to die one day, that doesn’t mean that because of sin. Praveen murdered his brother, might be some circumstances might have made him to murder. No one wants to murder and sit in jail in this world. 90% of prisoners are good and situations made them criminals. Tomorrow you and me may have same situation. Our duty is to pray for all including sinners instead of cursing them

@Gladys Mudarth, Mangalore I pity you ms. gladys. By saying this u have taken God's wrath on u. To all the readers, just to remind u'll, one who is born has to die. Be it a natural death or unnatural one. Mr. Pravin, i am sure, has had his punishments for what he had done to his brother. I request each and everyone to behave in a cultured way and not to rejoice on the death of anybody what so ever. 'cause we don't know when our time will come.

The most popular leader Pramod Mahajan was killed by his own brother Pravin Mahajan and in this case, there is more than the bullets conspiracy is behind this. Under what compulsion Pramod killed his own brother is only the brain who hired to do so, knew it.
Let's keep our emotions behind and go little further. Soon after the death of Pramod Mahajan, how is his own son lived. Within 3 months married, caught in drug scandal, divorced etc.
Our heartfelt condolences to Pravin Mahajan's family. May his soul rest in peace.

There should not be any Rejoice. But the punishment he is supposed borne will got by Destiny. In Our religion – murder is the biggest Sin & if some one kills somebody for money/personal gains is as good as kills whole humanity. The Act of Late Parveen mahajan is not less than a Terrorist. My Sympathies to Both Mahajan Families & Almighty bestow strength & patience to them

Pravin died as a murderer of Pramod but there is more to it which for the sake of his family Pravin did not expose it and the BJP leadership knew about those explosive incidents but did not prevent Pramod, their poster-boy.

No one knows why he killed his own brother. One cant generalise and come to a conclusion. My sympathies are with both the families. Untimely two sisters were widowed. I pray Almighty God to give patience and courage to the two bereaved families to bear this loss. May the departed soul rest in peace. May God unite them when they meet Him. Life if lead in spiritual way, no one can harm us and we are sure to lead a peaceful and contended life until we meet our natural death. May I request the readers not to rejoice over the death of Mahajan siblings. Thats more cruel and uncultured.

He shot his brother in a fit of anger, killing him and in the process destroying his life as well. This is a clear case of lacking clarity when in anger though his intention may not have been to kill, but to just teach his brother 'a lesson'. It is sad that 2 (maybe more)lives were lost in the process.
What saddens and worries me is that if 2 well educated people can meet such an end, what is the reason we are getting to see this at a time when progress in science and technology is made every second.
Have we all lost our conscience, the inner conscience, the GPS of the soul? What is our value system based on? Where are we headed? Does education make any difference at all? Or was this just a rare in the rare case. We know that is not true.

When he killed his brother did he had any sympathy and now why public should sympathise ? What he did he got. This was the punishment which came from above. So I am sure no one will feel sorry for his death but be happy to hear this good news of his death.
