Mangalore: Valencia Parish Association ‘Saheli’ Celebrates Women’s Day

‘Saheli’, the women’s association of St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia, commemorated Women’s Day on Sunday March 7, during the annual day celebrations of the parish.
 
The liturgical participation at 6.30 am on Sunday brought the members together in meaningful participation.  The members showed a gesture of generosity by collecting a few articles and goods to be offered to the needy women of the parish.
 
Prayers were offered for the constructive role of the association and for the empowerment of women.

 

Fr Maxim Rosario affirmed the need for recognition and opportunities for women so as to develop a balanced collaborative world.
 
Saheli organized a talk on health and hygiene at 5.30 pm on Sunday at the parish hall.
 
Dr Jacintha Martis, dermatologist, and Dr Amita Ray, gynaecologist, Fr Muller Medical College, were the resource persons.
 
Valencia parish priest Fr Bonaventure Nazareth appreciated the service rendered by Saheli in the church and emphasized the need for hygiene and health among both men and women. 
 
Saheli was established in March 2009 under the guidance and enthusiasm of Fr Nazareth for the empowerment of women.  Since then, it has been conducting useful programmes to reach out to people.
 
Dr Martis spoke of the need for hygiene at home, work places, and surroundings for better health and to reduce the incidence and spread of disease. She also emphasized on ageing and the possible control one can have over the consequence of external ageing, especially on the skin. 
 
Dr Ray spoke of menopause and its symptoms and post-menopausal effects, especially like osteoporosis.  She called for the need to understand self and the need to be informed than getting misled by some unauthorized agencies.  She suggested an increase in calcium intake and avoiding self-medication. 
 
Around 200 participants enthusiastically participated in the programme.  A question and answer session helped the participants to clarify doubts.
 
Association president Jacintha Sequeira welcomed the gathering.  Secretary Shirley D’Souza presented the annual report. 
 
Some spot games were arranged for the participants on the occasion.
 
Valencia parish council secretary Flavy Sequeira was also present.
 
Joyce Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.  Anita Rodrigues compered the programme.
