Udupi, Mar 23: The annual Rathotsava was held with pomp and gaiety at the historical Sri Mahalingeshwar temple, Padubidri, near here on Sunday March 21.  A large number of devotees from neighbouring villages worshipped Sri Siddi Vinayaka, who is revered as the protector of calamities and tragedies.

The residents of neighbouring villages - Nadsalu, Avaralu, Bengre, and Padebettu have been worshiping Sri Mahalingeshwar since generations.  The devotees seek the divine blessings of the deity in times of troubles, difficulties, nature’s fury etc.

The annual Rathotsava at the temple was begun on Sunday March 14, while Ratotsav was held on Sunday evening.

Chendu Utsava, a distinct traditional game was held at the temple grounds on Monday March 22 evening.  The football made out of the skin of sheep is donated every year by a family for many decades.  A football is made out of that skin which would be used for just one season annually.  The elders of Abbediguttu initiate the traditional football game.  Two teams representing south and north competed in the game, which was viewed by thousands of devotees who had gathered to witness the grand celebrations.

The photographs actually took me to the festival. I missed the carfestival and Chendu utsava since last 25 years, as I could not visit in the month of March. Hope to be there soon. I feel the crowd is a much less than what it used to be. I think people should participate in such festivals which are part of our culture.

Thanks to daijiworld, I am hearing of the Chendu Utsava for the first time. There could be many more events like this, which are unique in our place and we do not know. When we were small, in our place there was cock fight every week. I do not know, if this game is still on in some place.

Thanks Daiji for bringing these pictures from my home. March 21 function in the morning and night is always grand, together with Chendu the following day. No big crowd in these pictures. Expect more pictures of March 21 night. Good work appreciated.
