Kundapur, Aug 23: In a bizarre incident, family members of a deceased man were handed over the mortal remains of a different person.

The faux pas came to light just minutes before the final rites were going to be held.

A 65-year-old resident of Koteshwar died of coronavirus. His body had been packed and brought to Halekote cemetry by ambulance. As the body was packed, the family could not verify the identity.

However, when the packing was opened to conduct the last rites, the family to their shock realized that the body was not their relative's.

Instead of a 65-year-old, the family found the body of a young man.

Chaos prevailed at the cremation ground over the exchange of the body. The family members and locals took the ambulance driver to task for carrying the wrong body. The locals held a flash protest at the spot.

The police arrived and tried to pacify the locals.

By noon, the elderly man's body was brought to the cemetry and the young man's body was taken back.
