'Find a new chief, will step down': Sonia Gandhi responds to letter by Congress leaders

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SHP)

New Delhi, Aug 23: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has responded to the letter written by top Congress leaders where they urged for a meeting to discuss the internal crisis that has been plaguing the party.

In her response to the letter, Sonia Gandhi has told the party leaders to get together and find a new party chief. She also told them that she was not interested in leading the party once again when the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on August 10 had requested her to assume the reins of the organisation again, sources stated.

Gandhi said that she would step down from the party's interim chief's post at the internal meeting to be held on Monday August 24.

Sonia Gandhi accepted the post of the interim chief after much persuasion only on one condition that the party would find her replacement soon.

After Rahul Gandhi had decided to resign from his post, Congress leaders had approached Sonia Gandhi to take over.

At that time too, Sonia Gandhi mentioned in her response that she had insisted that the new president should be someone from outside the Gandhi family, a senior functionary of the party quoted from the letter.

Reportedly, Rahul Gandhi while resigning from the top post had also told the Congress Working Committee in its meeting on May 25, that the party should elect a non-Gandhi as its new president.

Congress Working Committee (CWC) is holding a meeting on Monday, August 24 to raise issues regarding the internal crisis in the party. The letter signed by 23 top party leaders to Sonia Gandhi seeks to discuss the leadership issue present within the party.

CWC will be assembling for an online meeting on Monday, three weeks after a meeting witnessed the clash by leaders over the party's political decline.

The letter was signed by members of parliament, former ministers and chief ministers and members of the CWC. The senior party leaders have said they are unhappy with "uncertainty" and "drift" in the party, along with demanding "honest introspection", "collective leadership", and stressing that the "youth are losing confidence" in the party.

The letter was signed by senior leaders like Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Vivek Tankha and Anand Sharma.

Congress Communication Department chief Randeep Surjewala, however, denied any such move by Sonia Gandhi, saying nothing has been communicated by the interim President or said on her behalf.

A top aide of Sonia Gandhi too denied any such move and said that everything will depend on the Congress Working Committee meet.

The Gandhi family has found strong backing from Punjab and Chhatisgarh Chief Ministers, with the former, Captain Amarinder Singh saying that "this is not the right time to raise this demand (of a leadership change)".

His Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel has urged Rahul Gandhi to return as the party's leader.

State Congress units are likely to hold emergency meetings to back the Gandhis for the top post.

Even some of the leaders who have written a letter to the party, said that there is no dispute on the leadership issue of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The pro-Gandhi brigade is likely to take on the dissenters in the CWC meet, while many names have started doing the rounds, especially two Dalit leaders - Mallikarjun Kharge and Sushilkumar Shinde, as likely replacements if Sonia Gandhi doesn't want to continue.

While Kharge is close to Rahul Gandhi, Shinde has been a former Home Minister and Maharashtra Chief Minister.

Sources say that a collective system may also be proposed or a team of leaders may be appointed as Vice Presidents to assist Sonia Gandhi in case there is no consensus on the change of the leadership and Rahul Gandhi does not want to return to the leadership role.

i am not into politics but one can predict that LARGEST DEMOCRACY in the world soon to be proved futile as we are leaning to the TWO MEN ARMY ! which is a naked truth. People forget that there should be a balance act of co-existence of Ruling and Opposition as per the Indian Constitution.

They taken oath to destroy congress from the routes even the FOURTH pillar of constitution pouring the OIL on fire that is again owned by the RULING party called GODI MEDIA.

Soniaji Thanks for your decision, you may leave now ! your existence in Indian politics is irrelevant now.

3.Excellent Intelligent brain used to bring computer technology that's how IT/Tel communication expanded and many of them work abroad & they love it there..
4.Free hands to Business/Industrial sector.. because that only sector creates jobs....rather than controlling for selfish gain.
5.Jain Jawan/Jai Kisan never suffered those days..
6.All time helping hands for poors..rather than raising temperature of oxygen not to breathe
    7.After all …Little corruption everywhere/now/then & future… except in God’s kingdom..

The damage has been done. The party seems to be beyond repairs. Non Gandhi family will be Priyanka Vadra obviously and if that happens which seems to be highly y likely, Bjp has come to power because Congress totally lacked leadership in the last 10 years. It is not what they have not done with the economy. It was in power because of the " brand" value of the party which eventually fail if there is no quality leadership topless from the front. Anyone outside of Gandhi family will leave a imploded party with splinter groups and ultimately the the original party will totally disintegrate. Good luck to the grand old party!!!

Congress has far better wise and competent candidates for the position compared to BJP president J.P. Nadda who is a complete dumbo and definitely only a mouth piece remote controlled from Nagpur HQ. Rahul Gandhi is a very good candidate and in recent times he has displayed proven leadership qualities and resolved crucial challenges within the party and against the opposition. Even if he side steps his bigger role and valuable contribution to party the will still continue.

I tend to disagree with you. RaGa is not a leadership material . Firstly RaGa lacks political intelligence , it was evident in his choosing the wrong slogans and themes in his election campaigns. Second, he is an indifferent speaker in general, and especially so in India's national language, Hindi. Third, he lacks administrative experience, never having held a proper job of any kind (whether before entering politics or after it). Fourth, he lacks stamina and consistencey, frequently disappearing from the public stage for weeks at a time. Fifth, he comes across as an entitled dynast to voters . The current gen of voters in India of the 21st century - ask their leaders what they have themselves done, not whose son or grandson they are.

A Non-Gandhi as the chief may not last long.

Most Indians find it comfortable working with people of their own state, or talking the same language.

A Keralite keader, for example, will appoint only Keralites around him. A Gujju might want only of his ilk.

So, despite all the current dramas, the baton might get quickly passed back to a Gandhi.

The crisis erupted with the resignation of Mr Rahul Gandhi. It was obvious that he would resign after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after seeing the half-hearted involvement of congressmen in the election campaign. Almost all the top leaders were interested in ensuring the victory of their kith and kin. If the Congressmen expect to be in power all the time and desire that the business of the Gandhi family is to catapult them to power then it is right decision to hand over the reins to a non-Gandhi family member and ask them to prove their mettle. It is very true that the abrupt decision to resign by Mr Rahul left a void in the decision-making process in the party. This has to be resolved tomorrow to save the only sensible and sane opposition party - the Congress to challenge a lame-duck Government at the Centre.
