Mangaluru: Fr Dionysius Vaz appointed provincial of Karnataka Jesuit province

Mangaluru, Aug 25: Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ has been appointed the new Provincial of the Karnataka Jesuit Province on Tuesday, August 25. He has been serving as the Rector of St Aloysius Institutions since May 2, 2016. He will be taking over charge from Fr Jerome Stanislaus D'Souza.

An alumnus of St Aloysius from 1969 to 1981 and again from 1994-97, Fr Dionysius Vaz is a native of Highlands, Falnir.

Fr Dionysius is one of the four kids born to Richard and Juliet Vaz. He joined the Society of Jesus at Mount St Joseph, Bengaluru and did a year-long juniorate programme at Beschi College, Dindigul, philosophy studies at JDV, Pune, theology at Vidyajyothi, Delhi.

On April 14, 1997, he was ordained as a priest. He has an MA in sociology and has experience in the formation of young Jesuits, social work, Ignatian spirituality, counselling and in the pastoral field.

    I have known Father Dianysus Vaz for the past several years as an outstanding Jesuit rendering service to the community specially to the needy.

    For some time now it was expected that he would go on a promotion and finally he is leaving. His going away to is a loss to Mangalore and a gain to Bangalore.

    I join several others in congratulating Father Dion and wishing every success in his new assignment.

    Also, today (26 August) is the 110 birth anniversary of Saint Mother Theresa. Archbishop of Mumbai, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias is offering a mass at 7-30 am at Holy Name Cathedral, Mumbai, on her behalf.
