Supreme Court imposes Re 1 fine on Prashant Bhushan for committing contempt

New Delhi, Aug 31: Prashant Bhushan, who was held guilty with charges of contempt for tweets against the judiciary has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 1 by September 15 as a punishment.

The Supreme Court on Monday, August 31 pronounced the judgement and said that if Bhushan the activist-lawyer fails to pay the amount would be debarred from practise for three months and undergo a sentence of three months.

Earlier this month, Bhushan was convicted for contempt of court by the Supreme Court over two of his tweets against the judiciary.

Defending his stand, Bhushan refrained from apologizing stating it would be contempt of his conscience after the Supreme Court gave Bhushan a date until August 24 to submit an unconditional apology and asked him to reconsider his defiant statement for which he denied.

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan asked the Apex Court to not make Bhushan a martyr for his tweets against the judiciary and show judicial statesmanship.

    Prashanth is a fine lawyer like his father Shanthi....however he should stop talking politics like Kashmir and Naxals....also AAP episode proves he is finest lawyer but poor politician....

    What do you mean …… people should sit quite and Thali bajao for Modi ..Shah's crookedness. Hat's off to Prashant Bhushan.... whole nation should stand for him …. and he should lead his fight for nation. Supreme court judges and BJP team thought that Prashant Bhushan will not agree for pay fine of 1 Rs , and ultimately if he goes to jail they can enjoy fooling the nation for next 3 years. But Mr Bhushan is a clever advocate... he opted to pay 1 Rs fine and can fight more and more such cases in supreme court curb corruption and save the country from destroying but such bad elements.

    We have a duty to support all those activists who work for the common man putting their life at risk. Eminent advocate Prashant Bhushan has the national interest at heart always. That is the sole reason for him to fight for justice for all good causes.
    Prashant was almost choked during the hearing and forced to admit which he did not. There are very few fighters like Prashant Bhushan who are bold, brave and duty bound. May their tribe increase and India benefit from such selfless warriors.

    Re 1 to worth of contempt? is that the price for contempt of SC? Why punish him at all. SC should have ignored. Prashant Bhushan has become a hero. What happens if he refuses to pay and undergoes 3 month imprisonment?

    Unbelievable! Even in KSRTC loos, they collect Rs 2 or 5.

    Supreme court wasted all this time for a Re 1 judgement and all because a lawyer tweeted a photo of the SC judge riding a bike without a mask and helmet during covid lockdown ? SC seems to have a lot of free time dealing with trivial cases like these and giving judgement when MLAs go hibernating in retreats. Why can't the SC take some of the workload off the high courts - suo moto basis ?

    By imposing a Re 1 fine, India has saved itself from a lot of bad press internationally.

    There are many international organisations that are interested in the right of free speech around the world. They warn other Governments and big-time investors.

    So, whoever decided to impose a Re 1 fine has saved India from potentially a huge financial embarrassment.

    Good, Mr. Prashant Bhushan didn't apologise. Otherwise our democracy would be laughing stock. Judiciary used as a puppet; even our independence is at stake.

    So many things happening all over India, but media is silent. They have only Sushant case in hand. People have become poorer, unemployment, covid deaths, floods, bridges and building collapses, even the farmers have lost their farms in floods, labourers children cannot go to schools, etc, but still government talking only about development and all are silent.

    Supreme Court takes Suo Moto note and registers a contempt case, enquires, finds him guilty, tells him to apologise , when he doesn't budge it fines him with one rupee fine. What was the Supreme Court doing? It is disgrace to the judicial system that public spirited lawyer like Prashanth Bhushsan was tried for no reason when there were many issues facing the country. It is in fact a mockery of justice system and it is sad to see that the those who are supposed to dispense justice are part of this mockery. The judgement and subsequent sentencing of charging one rupee fine only says about the triviality of the issue and is the best example of something like digging ones own grave.
