Udupi: Mentally ill elderly woman tries to commit suicide, rescued

Udupi, Sep 2: An elderly woman, who is reportedly mentally ill, tried to kill herself by jumping into the rivulet at Uppoor on Wednesday, September 2. Social worker Vishu Shetty, who came to know about the incident, took her to Dr A V Baliga Hospital at Doddanagudde and got her admitted and displayed humanity for which he is known for.

Vishu Shetty informed the matter to senior citizens' helpline as well as women police station. Rashmitha and Anitha from senior citizens' helpline had also helped in the rescue operation of the elderly woman.

Somu Marakalti (70), wife of late Rama Marakala, is the woman who jumped into the rivulet. It is learnt that the woman does not have children and was leading a lonely life, which led her to take this extreme step. Though search was made to locate her relatives, the attempts of police and social worker proved futile.
