Vijayapura, Sep 5: There is a unique village in the district, which is known as the Kashi of teachers. Every household in this village has a teacher.

The name of this teachers' village is Lachyana in the taluk of Indi in the district. Some of the households have even three to four members who are in the teaching profession.

This village, which is just five km from the Bheema river and the border of Maharashtra has a population of around 12,000 people. The main reason for having so many teachers in this village is the teachers' training centre that is located in the village.

This village boasts of the renowned temple of Sri Siddalinga Maharaja Kamarimata. This teachers' training school known as Sri Siddeshwara teachers’ training school was started in 1950 by Banthanala Sanganabasava Shivayogi.

Nearly 6,000 teachers have received their training from this school since 70 years. The teachers, who have passed from this school, teach the students of neighbouring Maharashtra state also. In most of the schools in Karnataka, teachers from Lachyana teachers’ training school are employed. This is the first teachers’ training school of North Karnataka also.

This school was recognized by the Maharashtra government also when it started functioning. Aid was also being given. Till 2004, students were waiting to get trained in this school as teachers. However, after 2004, as the number of BEd and DEd colleges increased in Karnataka, the demand of this school has gone down.
