Bangalore: Apr 7 (DHNS) : The State government had submitted a proposal to the Centre to set up a National Police Information Technology Centre in Bangalore, Home Minister V S Acharya on Tuesday said. 

Addressing reporters after inaugurating Motor Transport, Wireless & Armed Reserve Modules of Police IT Software Application at office of the DGP, the Minister said the matter was discussed during a conference of Chief Ministers and Home Ministers of all states held on February 15. In its proposal to the Centre, the State had told the Centre that Bangalore’s strides in IT made it best suited to host such a centre, Acharya added.

“The centre will be a reality soon as Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has agreed to provide land for the centre and requested the Centre to release required funds to speed up the process,” the Minister remarked.

The minister said that police needed to enhance their technological skills and resources as terrorists and naxalites had mastered the use of technology for furthering their agenda, he stated.

Ajai Kumar Singh said the Police IT Project brought all police departments under one roof. The software had been developed in association with Wipro Technologies. The Police IT Project was a result of 700 days’ field visits, 70 review meetings and 30,000 page records. The department aimed to cover 14,000 police personnel under the project. The prime objective of the project was to ensure paperless administration in the police department, he added.

“There are 12 elements in the project - crime, law & order, traffic & security, administration, finance, complexes, reserved arm force, vehicle, training, wireless service, forensic science and administrative information. The project will be fully implemented by the end of 2010,” the DG added.

The project would cover the Forensic Science Laboratory as also registration of foreign nationals. As many as 43,480 foreign nationals had already been registered.
