'Mehr' for Ayesha Rs.500, for Sania Rs.61 lakh

Hyderabad, April 12 (IANS) The two figures are not even comparable. Pakistani cricketer paid a paltry Rs.500 as 'mehr' for his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui but paid a whopping Rs.61 lakh for his second wife Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.

The 'nikahnama' signed by Shoaib while marrying Ayesha alias Maha Siddiqui in 2002, shows 500 Pakistani rupee as the 'mehr' (the gift given by the bridegroom to the bride at the time of marriage).

The former Pakistani skipper paid Rs.61 lakh as 'mehr' to Sania, whom he married here Monday.

Qazi Najmuddin Hussain, who completed the nikah formalities, said that the 'mehr' was fixed at Rs.61 lakh in cash.

Mehr, a prerequisite for a Muslim marriage, can be in the form of cash, gold or other valuables and it is aimed at providing some security to the wife in the event of divorce or widowhood. The bridegroom pays the 'mehr' which he can afford.

Shoaib is believed to have written the 'mehr' amount of Rs.500 just to complete the 'nikah' formality over phone.

The cricketer, who claimed that he married Ayesha presuming her to be the girl whose photographs he received, divorced her last week.

He also paid Rs.15,000 to Ayesha as maintenance for three months as per Islamic shariat.

Sania, Shoaib Get Married

Hyderabad, Apr 12: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza tied the knot with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik at a hotel here Monday after getting a no-objection certificate from the city police.

"The Nikah has been completed. Please pray for the couple," Sania's spokesperson Rucha Naik told media persons outside hotel Taj Krishna, adjacent to Taj Deccan.

Sania, 23, and Shoaib, 28, signed the 'nikahnama' and said "qabool hai" in the presence of a qazi and two witnesses from each side, sources said.

About 70 people, including close relatives and friends from both sides, attended the much-hyped and controversial marriage ceremony.

After the 'nikah', the guests offered 'zuhar namaz'. It was followed by lunch, where they were treated with traditional delicacies, including the famous 'Hyderabadi biryani'.

Since the Qazi had refused to perform the 'nikah' Friday in the absence of Shoaib's passport, sources said Sania's family got a no-objection certificate from the Hyderabad police. Shoaib's passport, seized last week in connection with a case filed by his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui, is still with the police.

Earlier, clad in red traditional bridal wear, which her mother wore on her wedding 25 years ago, Sania left her residence in Jubliee Hills amid drum beats and reached hotel Taj Deccan shortly after noon.

From there they went to the adjoining Taj Krishna, where Shoaib and his relatives are staying.

She was accompanied by her father Imran Mirza, mother Naseema, younger sister Anam and a few close relatives.

Shoaib, who divorced Ayesha last week, wore a black 'sherwani'. His mother, sisters and some close relatives attended the wedding. Security has been tightened at the hotel and the media was not allowed inside.

Earlier, Naik told reporters outside Sania's residence that there would be a 'mehendi' ceremony Tuesday. The 'sangeet' would be held the next day while Sania's family would hold the wedding reception April 15.

The high-profile marriage was surrounded by controversies ever since it was announced March 29.

It is learnt that the two families decided to solemnise the marriage Monday to avoid further controversies, especially in the light of Sunday's 'fatwa' issued by Islamic religious scholars against Sania and Shoaib living together before their wedding.

Sania's media manager Sunday night clarified that Shoaib moved out of Sania's house a few days ago.

The Sunni Ulema Board, a group of religious scholars, had declared that the act of Sania and Shoaib living together was against Islamic Shariat. It asked Muslims not to attend such marriages where men and women come together in close proximity in violation of Islamic rules.

Additional Commissioner of Police N. Narasimha Reddy said it may take a week for Shoaib to get back his passport from a court as some formalities with regard to closure of the case would have to be completed.

I am an NRI working in Dubai and I have several Pakistani friends who are like family to me. Just like we have good Indians and bad Indians similarly there are good Pakistanis and bad Pakistanis. There are many Pakistani girls married to Indian men and many Pakistani men married to Indian girls and are happily living in the UAE. There is always good and bad in every country. Terrorist exist every where in the form of naxals, maoists or otherwise.

Maha Siddiqui age 42, suffers from a personality disorder. "AYESHA" is her alter-ego, a slim beautiful girl is a fictional character that Maha created in her mind. There are many girls like Ayesha uff Maha who fool people online. Indians have a mentality of always blaming the men but please remember there are evil woman like Ayesha too in this world. I am glad he just signed the divorce papers and got over with it because after all he did sign the paper keeping the girl in the picture in his mind and Ayesha uff Maha signed keeping Shoaib in mind. She does not deserve a penny, she and her family should be charged for cheating and forgery. I wish Sania and Shoaib all the best.

Why so much mistrust between India & Pakistan. After all both these countries were together for centuries as Indian Sub-Continent. The partition had divided the families and friends and the later wars brought in more bitterness between us which otherwise was one nation. It is high time that both Pakistan & India realise their past mistakes and amicably resolve J&K, river water and other internal disputes and co-operate for better tomorrow.

Both should realise that because of the bitterness there was huge loss for both the sides and the middlemen were the winners. We are still backward, uneducated, unhealthy & sick, without clean drinking water, starvation deaths, loan burdened suicide by farmers and what not. Our leaders & fundamentalists have not come to their senses and still looking for an opportunity to degrade, attack & kill one another. Let this marriage bring peace & prosperity to both the warring nations which infect was the creation of the British & the developed world to sell their war-head arsenals.

    Dear Mr Shammi/Mangalore,

I agree with your views. But fixing a mehr @ Rs. 500/- that too a person of riches like Shoeb is nothing but mockery of Islamic/Shariah laws of marriage. If one cant afford to pay then a date grain would suffice to solemnise the marriage. The question here is Is shoeb that pauper to fix a mehr at Rs. 500/-. When I got married in 1987, I paid a mehr of Rs. 1,250/- to my wife. Mehr should not act as a burden to the groom and we should encourage marriage between the eligible couples by simplifying and minimizing the mehr amount and not asking for any dowry from bride. But here affordability and mans social status are the main factors that decides the mehr amount.

I am questioning the affordability and social status of Shoeb Malik here> Thats it.

As per my knowledge Mehr is demand from Bride side (bride/parents) if Ayesha/Her parents didn`t demanded for more than 500, why we blame shoaib, as per our celebrity people history actress like Madhuri, Meenakshi many more inidan gire have marriede with Indian origine American citizens so i dont think we have to make issue of these things.

In Sania's case "Mehr" (bride money) is justified as its affordable by the groom and in Ayesha's case its totally injustice done to her by both the groom and her parents. I advise Ayesha to seek a compensation of Rs. 61 lakhs from Shoaib.

Marriage is surely a personal choice. No disputes about that. A white can marry a black and vice versa. Similarly, matches can be from different countries and continents too.
Take the classic case of our own Sashi Tharoor who has married more than once I understand. His latest choice being a Kashmiri babe in the line up. What a trip from Kerala to Kashmir via Kolkata and other places for Tharoor! Quite a diplomat indeed.

Anyway, back to Sania who was never a great tennis player at all. Except that in India where there were no prominent women performers she made hay. Extremely lucky one can say. Only pity is that she could not get a good match within India. One can see her fading away quickly from the tennis scene. Pakistan will soon realise that she is not going to be their new found tennis bahu. And, hang on, will she be able to display her game and courtcraft in Pakistan ?

As civilised human beings, one should wish the newly married couple a good wedded life and hope that they don't mix politics in their marriage and play the game in a clean manner. Good luck S & S. Can we say Hyderabad's loss is Sialkot's gain ! Or rather, if they are planning to stay in Dubai, let us all say welcome to the City of Gold with your bucket of gold.

Excellent coverage by My favorite Daiji,
    Reading this news I felt,
    1. One Pakistani purchased an Indian Muslim for 64 Lakhs, and another just for 500 Rs.
    2. There were no Indian Muslims could pay so much amount to purchase Sania.
    3. One advise for Sania, Dont spend that money now, soon it will be help for you. Pakis are born liars.
    4. Thank God, her name was not Sania "MISHRA"...If it was so, our Media and human rights activists would become fully busy commenting and protesting.

That Paki just cheated Ayesha, lied that he dint married her and now paying 64Lakhs for Sania, while he paid 500 for Ayesha.
