Mangalore, Apr 19: Rains, thunder and lighting struck most parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on the nights of Saturday April 17, and Sunday, April 18. Many places suffered from protracted periods black out, as power supply got snapped.

Scores of electric poles, areca nut and coconut trees etc., fell to the ground and a few houses were damaged in the lightning.  All the taluks in the two districts got rains, causing the temperature to plummet by a few degrees.  Sullia taluk also came under spells of hurricane. Traffic on a few inner roads was affected because of the trees that had fallen across them. In the city and other places, the power that got cut on Sunday night, was restored only at around 7 am on Monday. After a huge tree got uprooted at Tokkottu near here, the traffic was blocked, and power lines got snapped.

A house owned by Indira Salian in Bengre was damaged after a coconut tree fell on it. The loss due to the incident is estimated to be of about a lac of rupees. A tree also fell on a moving jeep bound for Kerala at Tokkottu, but no one was injured.

Religious functions at various venues including some temples were affected because of the sudden rain.  Fishing activity was disrupted as the fishermen could not venture out for fishing. The fishing boats owned by Nalini Salian (Abhin), Anasuya (Sri Janani), Srikant (Janana Sri), Shivanand (Pragati Sagar), Bhoja Kharvi (B R Sagar), Ashok Kharvi( Anuj), Karunakar Kharvi(Jalagowri Prasad), Taranath Mendon (Shivakripa) and Shankar Kharvi (Jala Nagin), which were moored at Bengre near the Old Bunder fishing port, tilted into the water and suffered damages to the tune of Rs 75,000 to one lac rupees each.
