Karnataka SSLC Results: Decline in Pass percentage

Bangalore, May 6 (DHNS): The SSLC examination pass percentage registered a significant seven per cent drop this year over last year’s record as the results of last month’s exams were announced here on Wednesday. 

As compared to last year’s overall pass percentage of 75.77, this year only 68.77 per cent of the 8, 20,778 students who had appeared for the exams passed. The success rate is the lowest in the last four years.  The significant drop in the pass percentage is being attributed to the change in the SSLC question paper pattern, from the predominantly objective type to the descriptive type this year.

However, the highest individual score is impressive. Three candidates scored 619 out of 625 marks. According to the subject wise data provided by the Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board, mathematics and science proved to be the hardest for candidates. The total pass percentages for the two subjects stood at 71.55 per cent and 75.64 per cent.

A total of 566 students failed in maths while the second language also proved tricky for many with as many as 619 students getting zero. First language proved to be the favourite among students with as many as 285 students getting 100 per cent marks.
Announcing the results here this evening, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri acknowledged the drop in percentages.

“We are aware that there is a drop in the pass percentage this year as compared to previous years,” the minister said.  Attributing the lower success rate to the shift in the question paper pattern, the minister, however, exuded confidence that “the change will yield a qualitative improvement in students in the long-run.”

Of the total of 8,20,778 candidates who had appeared for the SSLC examinations held last month, 5,21,658 candidates passed. The pass percentage among repeaters and private candidates was also dismal with 21.56 per cent and 7.26 per cent respectively.  The total pass percentage, including that of repeaters and private candidates for the examinations, stood at 63.56 per cent.

While full details of education district-wise and school-wise results would be known Thursday, Chikkodi district recorded the highest pass percentage, bettering its last year’s third position. The district registered a pass percentage of 82.23 per cent.

Udupi and Mangalore, which traditionally recorded better performances, dropped to fourth and eighth positions respectively. Other districts which dropped down the table with poorer pass percentages than last year were Bangalore South and Mysore which came in at 22 and 26 with pass percentages of 65.84 and 62.45. Bidar district is once again at the bottom at 34 with an overall pass percentage of 32.27. 

However, girls continued to outshine boys this year, too, with their pass percentage standing at 70.97 per cent as compared to 66.67 per cent among boys. Significantly, rural students once again outperformed their urban counterparts with a pass percentage of 67.88 as against 65.33 per cent among urban candidates. Here too, girls outscored boys with a pass percentage of 71.13 per cent as compared to 68.87 per cent. The results will be available at all schools by 2 pm on Thursday.

Udupi bags 4th place, DK slips to 8th position in SSLC

Udupi district has been pushed to 4th place (77.3 per cent) while Dakshina Kannada district managed to secure 8th place (72.75 per cent) in the SSLC exams this year. 

The position of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in the results of SSLC exams last year was I and IV respectively. Kodagu district has registered 75.76 per cent, ie, 0.01 per cent better than Dakshina Kannada to secure 7th place while Chikmagalur secured 15th place.

Out of the 31,543 students who appeared for SSLC exams from Dakshina Kannada district, 22,949 have passed (10,500 boys and 12,449 girls). Similarly, out of 16,479 students who appeared for exams in Udupi, 12,739 have passed (6,086 boys and 6,653 girls).

Meanwhile, in Dakshina Kannada, as many as 40 schools have secured 100 per cent results out of which 1 is aided, 2 are government and 37 are unaided. Similary, in Udupi, 12 students have secured 100 per cent results out of which 1 is aided and 11 are unaided. No government school has achieved 100 per cent results in Udupi.

Zero per cent results

In the State, a total of 86 schools have registered zero per cent results. Out of them, 2 are government schools and 84 are private schools. Bidar registered the lowest pass percentage of 32 in the State.

Three students have bagged 619 marks, the highest in the State. However, the Minister did not disclose their names on Wednesday.
