Bantwal: Man defrauds poor woman under guise of ‘Corona’ money, escapes with gold

Bantwal, Nov 9: In an incident that occurred on the morning of Monday, November 9, a financially poor woman lost her gold as she was fooled by fraudsters saying that she has got ‘Corona’ money in her name but need to pay fee in order to get the same and made good with her gold.

Jayanthi, resident of Amtadi Thalembila is the gullible woman who lost her ear rings in this incident.

Jayanthi had been to Mescom office of B C Road to pay the electricity bill. As she was returning after paying the bill, a stranger approached her and introduced himself as Santhosh son of Sheenappa. He said that the woman has received Rs 1.5 lac money as compensation for coronavirus. He also told the woman that she needs to pay Rs 10,000 in order to claim the same.

The fraudster asked Jayanthi whether she has brought the Aadhar card. When she said no, the stranger asked her to come to Mini Vidhana Soudha in order to file an application to claim the money. Later, the fraudster asked the woman about Rs 10,000. The woman said that she will give after asking with her son. The fraudster said that he has already spoken to her son and he has replied that he does not have the money with him and asked him to take the ear rings of the woman. The woman believed him and gave the ear rings. As soon as the fraudster got the possession of ear rings, he escaped from the spot.

Once the stranger took the ear rings and left, the gullible woman informed the matter to her son through a woman employee of Mini Vidhana Soudha. When son arrived on the spot, he came to know that his mother is taken for a ride by a cheat. He immediately registered a complaint at Bantwal city police station. CCTV camera of Mini Vidhana Soudha is being checked by the police to know the identity of the culprit.
