Congress stages protest, condemns privatisation of Mangaluru International Airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Nov 9: District Congress staged protest against the union government for privatising Mangaluru International Airport here at Kenjar on Monday November 9.

Addressing the protesters, former minister Ramanath Rai said, "When Congress was in power, several development works were undertaken. U S Mallya was the one who took the initiative for development works in Mangaluru with the support of Jawaharlal Nehru. U S Mallya is the reason behind Mangaluru airport. Now the union government has privatised many other airports including Mangaluru International Airport. Congress had started development works and several companies which are now being sold by the BJP government.

"BJP came to power by giving several promises which they failed to fulfill. BJP can be termed as Bharatiya Joot Party," he said.

Former MLC Ivan D’Souza said, "What was the need to privatise Mangaluru airport and give it to Adani. After Modi came to power, lot of favour has been done on Ambani and Adani. They have become richer today.

"BJP has no moral right to continue in the parliament after the airport has been privatised. None of the local BJP leaders spoke about it which is clear that they support Adani," he said.

District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai said, "Congress have contributed for the upliftment of this district with several development works such as port, railways, and airport to the district, but the BJP government is privatising whatever Congress has contributed.

“BJP has no concern towards the district and are behaving as slaves of investors. We urge the airport to be named after any prominent leaders of Dakshina Kannada. We appreciate that a bus stand near Kenjar was named after George Fernandes and we do not have any problem even if the airport is named after George Fernandes. We also urge the airport terminal manager of Adani to give job opportunities to locals instead of Gujarati citizens,” he said.

Former MLA J R Lobo, Abhayachandra Jain, Mohiudeen Bava and others were present.

Let them protest to extend the runway by another 2000 feet, provide CAT-III landing system, extend terminal building to include 4-6more aero bridges and more parking space for aircraft besides also completing the parallel taxiway and cargo complex. They should also protest for better road connectivity from all the three directions.

first of all, airport is given on long term lease to bidder who offered highest "per passenger fee" and not sold or diluted govt holding. secondly, no job is lost. Finally what is the earning to the govt to be compared may be a year later to the earning it used generate when it was managed by AAI. otherwise, it is nothing but rhetoric by Congress.

I feel privatization of Airport is needed for further development. Mangalore airport facilities must get to international standards. Only private entities can do this. I oppose merger of Mangalore based banks with loss making other banks. But privatization of Airport is very much necesaary. Think practically. Mangalore is not going to lose airport or shift airport to some other place. Its just privatization. Do you think karnataka govt will ever develop this airport??... Karnataka govt didnt even build proper bus stand in Mangalore until now. Karnataka govt gives same importance or maybe less importance to Mangalore and considers it same as some other poor Tier-3 towns of state though Mangalore is bigger city.

Airports, Mangalore frequent travelers know what problems they face when they reach the airport. before the Adani's came in. Lack of facility, irresponsible behaviors, people are tired of travelling when they reach need to stay in big Queue for immigration, security checking luggage etc. etc.
We need facility to be developed, airport to be developed, need more bigger flights, like there are more things we are lagging behind.
So Now, Adani's have come in, Privatization, at least I believe airport administration will be developed, terminal will be developed. Need more easiness, transparent and comfortable for the users of airport rather than people who just protest. Uphold the culture of Mangalore, open job opportunities for the locals, there are many things.

Is Mangalore table top airport capable to land bigger flights. I think the Airport is located at a wrong spot....
Mangalore Airport has witnessed one incident, so now hope the public know about the risk factor of this Airport...
Why can't a proper Airport with good location for Aircrafts to land be built in Mangalore.
Surely Mangalore will rise to a better standard city.
All Roads in Mangalore should be broadened and concrete with proper footpaths of one feet above the road, and road crossings for people within the city limits in designated areas.
Penalize the jaywalkers who violate the rules.

Guys!! The privatisation took 3-4 years and you woke up today? BTW the benefits of privatisation is much much better for airport employees and the public who use the services. Its already visible., I travelled yeserday. Only the age old money making Ramu Kaakas would suffer as they cannot make money by fleecing the passengers. My request to Congress is, do not indulge in such cheap antics. You will lose your existing and depleting support base.
