Mangaluru, Nov 11: Karnataka’s port city, Mangaluru, is unique in many ways. From beautiful beaches to rich culture and tradition, the city of Mangaluru has now grown to be an education hub in the state of Karnataka. It is the only city in Karnataka with all the modes of transportation available to make commuting easy for students from all over the country. The credit for transforming the paramedical scene in the city goes to Dr M Ramgopal Shetty. He founded Dr M V Shetty Memorial Trust and through the Trust, he was instrumental in introducing many vocational courses in nursing, physiotherapy, speech and hearing, medical laboratory technology and social work and education.
The Trust manages 15 different graduate and postgraduate courses in nine different colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru and Mangaluru University, Mangaluru. The Trust has many firsts to its name: The first nursing college in the private sector in the year 1987; the first physiotherapy college in Karnataka in 1989 and the first speech and hearing college in 1990.

Dr M V Shetty College of Social Work was established in the year 1999. It is the second college to start social work education under Mangalore University. The college offers a master's degree in Social Work (MSW) offering three specializations such as Community Development (CD), Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW) and Human Resource Management (HRM).
The campus is located along the northern coast of the city which is well equipped with an organized library, and spacious smart classrooms. Experienced and resourceful staff work to bring out the academic excellence in the students and nurture their talents in arts and sports. The annual cultural day is celebrated with extravagance, with a wide variety of competitions. The college has been a host to various intercollegiate tournaments and athletics meets. The annual graduation day is celebrated with grandeur as the college acknowledges the academic achievers.
