Government Decision on Caste-based Census Soon: PM

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS) The government will soon take an "appropriate decision" on caste-based census in the country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the Lok Sabha Friday.

Making a brief statement during a debate on the issue in the lower house, the prime minister said the union cabinet would take the decision soon.

The assurance came in the wake of pressure on the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to undertake a caste-based census.

MPs supporting the proposal have argued that data from such an exercise, particularly on other backward classes (OBCs), would help in planning welfare measures.

Opposition MPs thanked the prime minister after his brief statement.

As a student I learnt about 'Unity in Diversity' but I have never seen this, in our country. We identify ourselves on the basis of caste, religion, language, state and region. If we have to bring about unity and development, then we have to reduce the gap of diversity.

We are not interested in the caste of our Prime Minister or our President or any of our politicians or anyone. We just want to know what they have done in their capacity. Stop this nonsense of any caste-based census and work for the progress of the nation.
