Stage Set for Second Phase GP Polls in 15 Districts on Wednesday

Bangalore, May 11: Stage is set for the Second Phase of Karnataka’s  Grama Panchayat polls in as many as 15 districts on Wednesday.

Over 1.25 crore electorate will be exercising their franchise as polling will be held on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The State Election Commission has made all arrangements to ensure free and fair election in all 15 districts by deploying adequate number of police and polling personnel.

The commission has set up 16,064 booths. Of these, 4,539 and 3,226 booths have been identified as sensitive and hypersensitive, where additional security arrangements have been made.

These elections would decide the fate of over 1.15 lakh candidates who are in the fray for 40,351 seats.

Polling would be held to elect members of 2,833 grama panchayats in Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Kogadu, Mandya, Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Kundapur taluks of Ududpi district, Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttara Kannada districts.

No candidates have filed nominations for 128 seats while 3,938 candidates have been elected unopposed in 15 districts.

The State Election Commission has ordered repolling on Wednesday in 24 polling stations in 11 districts where gram panchayat elections were held on Saturday.

Counting of votes for all grama panchayats in the respective districts would be taken up on May 17 and the results are expected to be known by evening.

    Buying voters is comman in indian election but as per Suvarna TV calculation approximatly it may reach 300 ~ 600 INR/vote,it is too costly and also not reliable in indian election,better not to watch/quote Suvarna TV.

    ISMAIL K PERINJE, PERINJE/YANBU-KSA, when did you last visit India? Obviously, you don't know what is happening in different states of India, including Karnataka.

    These kind of things are quite common, though Hero Honda or Bajaj bike for 100 or 50 votes seems to be quite exaggerated. These TV guys will say anything & conveniently forget. But I have not seen such reports in print media as I read at least 10 English-Kannada dailies.

    There have been, of course, plenty of news reports of seats & posts of president-vice president being auctioned for the highest bidders by villagers & the going price, according to newspaper reports varies from Rs 3 to 5 lakh. So far, nobody has denied such reports, though there have been reports of hundreds of candidates getting elected unopposed! Officials have made some vague comments saying that if the reports were true, such auctions were illegal. But neither the State Election Commission nor the State Government have bothered to do anything.

    In fact, there was a 3-column headline in a Kannada daily saying Yeddyurappa's personal aide had promised Rs 3 to 5 lakh for any candidate joining BJP after the election. The daily mentioned the name of this aide & his picture along with CM. But nothing has happened. What do you say for that? This is democracy & Reddy controlled Yeddy rule. I am mentioning Reddys because everybody knows who financed the `Operation Kamala' in which several Congress & JD(S) leaders underwent OPERATION!

    A disturbing news telecasted by Suvarna TV yesterday that one Hero Honda Bike for 100 votes gaurnteed and for 50 votes Bajaz Bike!!!!

    Never before in the history of, at least GP elections such kind of corrupted give and take policy taken place.Total lacks in the part of election commission clearly visible in recent held all elections in Karnataka.

    What drives our people to go far such extreame to get elected for GP is Million Dollar Question.
