New Delhi, May 14 (IANS) India Friday extended the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as an "unlawful" group by two more years, a home ministry official said.
"The central government has extended the ban on the LTTE as an unlawful association by two years. The notification to this effect was issued today," the official said in a statement.
The brief statement didn't give the reason for extending the ban on a group that the Sri Lankan military crushed in May last year, killing its founder Velupillai Prabhakaran and all his top aides.
The LTTE was first outlawed in India in 1992 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a year after the the Tamil Tigers assassinated former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Since then, the ban has been extended every two years.
