Bengaluru: MLA Umanath Kotian urges government to name Mangaluru airport after Koti-Chennayya

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (DV)

Bengaluru, Dec 8: Mulky-Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian on Tuesday December 8 urged the Karnataka Legislative Assembly speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri to recommend the union government to name Mangaluru International Airport after Tulunadu bravehearts Koti-Chennayya.

Speaking during the winter session of the Karnataka Assembly, Kotian said, “We all know about the brave legendary twin heroes Koti-Chennayya. They were born in Tulunadu, five decades ago. In their span of life, they have built 66 'Garodi' and 33 'Tavu' and strived for truth and righteousness. Even today, these legendary twins are worshiped in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala states. Especially, there 260 Garodi outside the state. There is no discrimination of caste, religion, sect in the worship of these two legends. With the intention to keep the name of these two legendary as memorable, Mangaluru International Airport should be named as 'Veerapurusha Koti-Chennayya' Airport. It is a long pending demand of the public.

“Several rallies and protests have been carried out demanding the state government to name the airport after Koti-Chennayya. Hence, the state government should consider the public opinion and should name Mangaluru International Airport after Veerapurusha Koti-Chennayya,” he said.

All this naming and re-naming is only creating divisions in society. That's the bread and beer of a politicians. The right thing to do is associate a place with something in animate like a historical place or by what it is called. If tourist wants to fly in to Mangaluru, they may be confused whether they are flying into Koti-chennya town or Mangaluru.

I liked this discussion NOT the name change, gave me the opportunity to remember our primary school days. Nowadays Koti-Chennayya and Rani Abbakka and many more names are totally forgotten. We used to hear their stories in Primary Schools. At present, most of the South Kanara schools are in ENGLISH medium and all these names I DON't KNOW, existing in the school curriculum. Instead of naming the airport, making some effort to pass on this knowledge/culture to our youngsters would be long-lasting.

I am sure that with the discussions and arguements gojng on now for renaming Mangalore airport..., it is doubly guaranteed that name MANGALURU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT will stay on permanently...
Still, govt wishes to change the name ..Let it be Ullal Srinivas Mallya International Airport ..A tribute to a person who is being regarded as father of Dakshina Kannada dist...And responsible for making Mangalore airport.

These politicians are born to name and rename places instead of creating international standard airport. These clowns not bothered about quality of service at the airport and sufferings of the people. This airport is not of international standard and it will lose its importance due to bad service as we have quality airports in Kerala.

What is wrong with our politicians and political leaders. They are the elected leaders to work for people and their needs. Wasting time on non important issues.
Looks like; UP wave is sweeping southwards.
Mangaluru is the right and deserving name we are internationally recognized by our city name.

What Koti-Chennayya stands for is very clear from the several Yakshagana kathe (probably that's why they are still not forgotten). Name one building or monument in Mangalore named after them and that which exemplifies the importance our own guys have given in the past 70 years. Why suddenly the rehash of Satyameva Jayate should be the argument for Koti Chennaya? If the argument is strong, there is strong merit to fully support this demand/suggestion. The motive here is unfortunately purely politics.

The belief in Garodi is strong and I also subscribe to this for my own reasons that I saw as I grew up. But, other than that, we do not see anywhere. Mangalore city corporation building? New DC office building coming up? A Tulu chavadi proposed long time ago in Mangalore University named after him? No news on what is happening with that since.

Bangkok International airport is called Suvarnabhumi International airport - makes sense.
Delhi airport is named after Indira Gandhi - OK for creation of Bangladesh, which she herself never took credit for, for not alienating minorities from Congress and be identified as a leader who sent her army to a Muslim country - Nonsense, but such was the after effects of partition then.
Bangalore airport named after Kempegowda, an architect behind Bangalore being state capital
Bombay airport after Chatrapati Shivaji is still understandable.

Now what is the argument behind Koti Chennayya....

The closest I can think of is Mangaladevi International Airport as Mangalore derives name from her; but again this is not a proposal. Tulunadu comes closer because that is what binds the Mangaloreanism in all of us. But those sitting in Bangalore are already dealing with a hot potato called Marathi in the north; they may not have appetite for Tulunadu based activisim rise.

Why and what is need ???
Active politicians not to involve in this non developmental activity!!! simple they loose their public image for sure....
Public demand may be observed but still it is at this time not required at all when things are not normal and people don't have public life and economy is down!!, people have no proper works!!
Request politicians to involve themselves in developmental activities and got the rare time power, use it to public satisfaction so atleast next comfortable victory for BJP ..

This is an international Airport not a local Bus stand or a circle. Respect for local heroes and culture is fine. There are so many other places that can be given such lengthy names. If mangalore has to make a mark in the international scenario we need to name places like international airports with names that can be easily read and understood by the international community and tourists. This frog in the well attitude by our local leaders to achieve their personal agenda is going to hurt our city badly. Mangalore is melting pot of diverse religions, languages and cultures. Many great people have contributed to what mangalore is today. So let's not keep harping whose contribution is greater. Mangaluru or Mangalore is the place where all these great people lived. So let's stick to MANGALORE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT which sounds nice simple and sweet for all the world to say and remember.

MLA , try to bring a strong law on fishermen too. As we see there are lot os tragedies going on in district. You have to issue a life jackets to each boats. There are plenty real issues still there in so called SMART CITY. THINK SMARTLY... ACT SMARTLY.... Changing names are not a meaning of development. We need development.

There is a method in this madness. Not satisfied by a few name changes like roads and traffic circles, the real agenda of Tulu speakers seems to be to get Mangaluru itself to be formally named Kudla or perhaps even Koti-Chen nagar and the whole region as Tulunadu. Government should place limits to caving in to such community demands.
