Mangaluru, Dec 9: Many parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district received heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on the evening of Tuesday December 8 due to the effect of cyclone, as per the prediction of the meteorological department.

Now the cyclone is located at 3.1 km above sea level near the equator between southeast Arabian Sea and Indian ocean. Due to this the movement of clouds is rapid and causes the rain. According to the weather department the rain is likely to continue for the next two days in the coastal part of the state.

Mangaluru, Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia, Moodbidri, Udupi, Karkala, Hebri and Padubidri received good amounts of rain. Moodbidri received the highest rainfall with 69.5 mm rain, according to the information shared by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC).

The weather was too hot during the day. The plateau regions below the hills received half an hour of rains in the evening. Electricity was cut off for many areas till late in the night. Due to the cloudy weather since the past few days, the weather has been quite hot and humid since morning itself.

The arecanut agriculturists of Sullia suffered inconvenience due to the sudden rain as the arecanut which they had put in the verandah of their house for drying got wet. As this is the harvest season for arecanut, huge quantities of areca nuts are put for drying. If it rains suddenly, it cannot be protected. If the arecanut gets wet, it affects the quality of the produce.
