Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Hints he was Target, Police say Unlikely

Bangalore/New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) A day after an unidentified man opened fire in the Art of Living foundation ashram, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Karnataka police Monday differed on whether the firing was an attack on him or not.

The firing just after 6 p.m. caused minor injuries to a devotee in his right thigh as the bullet from an illegally-made .32 calibre pistol grazed him. The bullet was handed over to police late Sunday.

While Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said it appeared to be an attempt on his life as there were many people wanting to attack him, state police chief Ajay Kumar Singh said: "As of now it is being treated as an incident and not an attack on Guruji (Ravi Shankar)."

In New Delhi, Home Minister P. Chidambaram indicated that "dispute between two of (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's) followers" could have led to the incident.

"The incident took place after he (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar) had left in his car. It may not be correct to say that the firing was aimed at him," Chidambaram told reporters.

The Karnataka police chief also maintained that from the sequence of events given by the injured devotee, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had left the place when the firing took place.

The spiritual guru, however, strongly disagreed with this version and expressed "disappointment that police were brushing aside the matter."

"When my devotees said I had left, they mean I had left the dais after satsang (discourse) and not the complex," he told reporters at his ashram, about 25 km away from Bangalore city centre.

"I heard the noise when I was in the car and the car doors were being closed. It was a loud noise," he asserted.

Ravi Shankar said "the Intelligence Bureau and police should thoroughly probe the incident and not absolve themselves of the responsibility."

He also dismissed as speculation that the incident was the result of enmity between his devotees.

The injured devotee, Vinay Kumar Kollumath, hailing from Belgaum in north Karnataka and working as a software professional in Bangalore, told reporters he could not say whether Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had left the place.

"I was in severe pain. I was not in a state to find out whether the guruji had left the place," he said.

He also said he had no enemies and was coming to the ashram only for the last five or six days.

The AoL founder and his devotees and the state police also differed on the timing of the complaint.

The police chief said police were informed about three hours after the incident. However, one of the devotees working in the security/administrative wing of AoL said information was given over phone at around 8.20 p.m. and police came about an hour later.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar defended the delay saying none knew exactly what had happened. They also did not want to create panic as there were about 5,000 devotees present at the time.

"There was also heavy rain. The police station is about 45 minutes away from the complex. Police thought it was a small incident and wanted to know whether they can come in the morning to take the complaint," he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister B.S.Yeddyurappa and state Bharatiya Janata Party president K.S. Eshwarappa met Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at the AoL complex Monday evening and assured him full secutiy.

"We will give full security to Guruji and the ashram. (I) Have conveyed this to him," Yeddyurappa told reporters.

State police have been directed to conduct a thorough investigation and punish the guilty, he added.

Attacks on others in any way
is an aberrant act and the
    perpetrators must be severely
    punished.

Sri. Ravi Sankar and his "art of
    living" discourses are highly
philosophical. I read one of his
    articles related to the "sermon
on the mountain in the Bible"
(Mathew chapter 5). It was a
    scholarly article.

To hear his spiritual lecture, the
entrance fee is very high, and
only rich people can afford to
hear him. He is a regular visitor
    to the U.S.

It is a mind-boggling question: how
    the various religious gurus are
    charging exhorbitant fees for
    giving spiritual lessons? All the
    religious gurus are building
    palatial palaces, and riding in
the most expensive cars? Is it a
    wordly business camouflaged in
    a spiritual outfit?

When my friend who is a
    priest told his personal experience
and told me what his seminary
friend (Bishop) requested him in his first visit to the U.S.. The Bishop asked his
old friend to raise money to buy a
Benz car, and the excuse was this
" nobody will respect me if I don't
ride in a benz car". Did the
Bishop ever learn from the life
    style of Jesus? Indeed, religion
has turned as a business, and that
    itself is a complicated irony!

I have read many praising & not praising the Guru in this artice. In my opinion he is above other petty gurus or Godmen, but he too is not complete yet. He supported Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which was agasinst peace, if he loves & wants to spread peace & impartial. He should have professed all to follow Sri Ram's compassion & love for justice, & open their hearts for Lord Ram to dwell, instead of building some physical structures at disputed places, which are commercial places once their gates are opened for the public. He talks & attracts more wealthy desciples like Vijay Mallya, Godrej & industrial tycoons, to finance his jet travels worldwide-& they are called jet set gurus nowadays. But Compared to others he is better, mild & sane despite his huge following & wealth.

Mr. vishwamitra, you do some homework and come. Central govt utilizes the temple money over building churches and mosques. Do you know that and this is been happening from Nehru Gandhi time. So they can build churches convert our people, mus can build mosques and occupy the whole area so why not we have temples in our own hindustan. Temples should be improved like churches with good parking areas and should be kept clean.

    Hello Mr Rao
These Titles should mean nothing for the enlightened.
The Problem with these NGOs ashrams ,churches or holy places is that, the money that the devotees donate are entirely un accounted for ..We often do not get any bill for the services that are offered.
They completely are out of the governments tax and accountability machinery. The AOL charges hefty amount for their courses..There is no Bill or receipt concept.
They often say that the money goes for charity .. I am not sure ..

ravi sankar only lectured on peace..not a single word on violence or relegioun..
as your other relegius leaders are teaching in instiution to kill people of other relegiun or non beleivers to please particlualar god or jihadi war....
best example is ajmal or riyaz bhatkal who killed innocnet humans by chanting gods name who studied in such relegios education system.. ..
so as far me , its up to his follower to beleive him or not..

Today religion has become business. It is easy to sell and market. When a lot of money flows, it naturally creates division, enmity, jealousy when one's interests are not met. Investigations should find out the hand of untoward elements present within the Foundation.

    Dear Valson,

I agree to disagree with you on this :-)

First analyze why do people attack others when they can approach police dept or seek justice in the law office and if they can get solution.

There are cases when NRIs are attacked in India and failed to file a FIR. There were many news clippings recently where police have stripped off money from the NRIs, putting them behind the bar without FIR.

When a NRI is in trouble in other country, does the Indian embassy take care of them well ? I would say no.

Now coming to fellow citizens. Without money you cant file a case. Without money you cant approach lawyers. Without money you cant win the case. Everything is bribe. In a disorganized country, people take a direct path through attack or other means.

When neighborhood private land is encroached or added by the ashramas, how can he or she protect himself against the attrocities ? This is what exactly happened perhaps in Bidadi. One incident is good enough for the sufferer to torch the land and take revenge.

Before telling others not to take law in hand, we should find whether our system provides justice unbiased ?

This is where Somalia has pirates. There is a government involvement else how can these pirates attach every ship and get 100s of millions of $ as ransom successfully. No country is daring to attack suffering country Somalia as there is no benefit at all.

So every vessels are authorized to fire and recently two Indian sailors were mistaken

    Dear Sri Rai,

Religion and Sex sells well in the modern society, and hence you see more Pubs, more temples (Ex: Golden temple of a NRI, Vellore), more Ashrama (not the conventional ashramas of charity, but the money suckers where Khadi dressed people are active). Countrymen still suffer in poverty and the rich pour money to these ashramas in millions. A beginner Nithyananda had 50 to 60 crores in his bank a/c which is only part that is exposed. A decent Doctor or Engineer or Scientist in USA or Europe or Saudi cant earn a Crore Rs in 10 to 20 years without saving mind. So commenting on a Guru who is well established is mere a danger and hence many of our colleagues of other religion is condemning the attack.

Instead of following the principles of Gandhi, these people are using the so called Khadi jubba/dhotis to fool the people. People fear beard, the ash dots and the saphron or white clothes, which is a loophole.

Look at Japan, so honest, so clean and so principled, just because they follow Budhism principles, they follow good principles of Gandhi and others.

Look at Cambodia, though Polpot ruined the country, the people never learnt their lessons. Dishonest with corruptions and poverty.

We, India from a principled kingdom has taken a wrong path post independece, with these so called Yogic, Tantric magicians. This Vishwamitra is very angry, but in a wrong place (Parashurama's land).

God bless one and all. Sarva dharman parityajya Maamekam Sharanam Vraja

It is high time the authorities investigate the increasing no of scams involving pseudo Swami’s and con-men in India who have successfully marketed everything from yoga to meditation courses that claim to purify the body to Aurvedic nadi pariksha to sexual bliss and miracles while land grabbing and money laundering tops their priority list!

It is perhaps a coincidence that Sri Sri is in the news even before the shocking activities of Swami Nityananda, Swami Bhimananda (Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakoot Wale) and other crooks has faded away from our memories! Strangely in Karnataka almost all the Swami’s are non-kannadigas, usually from Tamil Nadu or Kerala or Andhra!

Most of the successful swamis are very intelligent and have successfully mastered the art of marketing-networking while carefully cultivating key politicians across all parties inorder to capitalize globally.

Sri Sri has been controversial for many reasons although he has managed to remain comparatively clean as far as his image is concerned. However, a family run company called Arvind Exports has been under the media scanner for money laundering.

It was almost a decade back when the CBI arrested Swami Chandraswami. Nothing ever came out of it and it is obviously going to be the same story with these modern day swami’s. However, such investigations will at least make the gullible public more aware of the facts.
