Karunanidhi Formally Donates his Home for Hospital

Chennai, June 2 (IANS) DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Miniser M. Karunanidhi Wednesday formally donated his residence to the Anjugam Trust to be converted into a hospital after his and his wife Dayalu Ammal's death.

At a function last July, Karunanidhi had announced his decision to convert his residence in Gopalapuram into a hospital to provide free medical assistance to the poor.

The transfer deed was formally registered Wednesday and handed over to the Anjugam Trust.

"I am now contended," he told reporters here later.

He added: "My children will not act contrary to my wishes. Even in this matter they didn't."

Queried about the most memorable incident that took place in his home, Karunanidhi said: "This is the incident."

Karunanidhi celebrates his 87th birthday Thursday and he wanted the transfer to be effected before that.

Karunanidhi bought the property in 1955 from Sarveshwara Iyer and in 1968 he transferred the property in favour of his sons M.K. Alagiri, M.K. Stalin and M.K. Tamilarasu.

After he expressed his wish to donate the property last year, the three transferred the title back to Karunanidhi.

The proposed hospital will be known as Kalaignar Karunanidhi Hospital.
