Mangalore: Public Protest to Mourn Valencia Road Accident Victim Held

Mangalore, Jun 3: A public protest was held at Valencia circle here on Thursday June 3 as a mark of dissent on the way youth, Conrad Ashok Pashan fell victim to the road accident, allegedly result of poor conditions of the roads in Valencia. Ashok, son of late Pascal Pashan and Theresa Pashan was killed in a road accident that occurred on the roads of Valencia on Wednesday June 2 morning.
Conrad’s family members, Congress leaders, advocate Ivan D’Souza, M G Hegde and Moiddin Bava led the protestors.
Addressing the protestors, D’Souza alleged that inefficiency in delivering duties by the officials of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) resulted in the death of Conrad. The officials have not seen to it that after construction of roads the pits are to be closed and the debris have to be removed, which finally has claimed a life, he said. He demanded officials’ resignation if they failed to get the roads speedily and efficiently completed.
Hegde alleged that MCC officials of not valuing human values. As the officials implement what they wish to while constructing roads without listening to the grievances of the people, this has resulted in lot of deaths off late, he charged.
Bava said that the Tuesday incident, that claimed the life of a person who was supposed to join a job in Dubai on Wednesday, reflected negligence of the MCC officials.
Jecinta Vijay Alfred, corporator, Valencia said that the MCC officials turn a deaf ear to complaints by the citizens.
Speaking to Daijiworld, M Manjunath Shetty, sub-inspector, Bunder police station said that the people around Valencia opposed felling of trees, which has resulted in narrowing of the stretch. He stressed that not all the accidents occur due to negligence of MCC, but also due to the carelessness of the riders.
Johnson Pereira, a local resident explaining about the negligent attitude of MCC said that recently he had complained to the MCC officials with regard to the streetlight near his residence that faces the danger of a fall anytime, but so far no action has been taken.
Ashok’s funerel cortege left his residence Bomeena Cottage, St Joseph Nagar Jeppu for Jeppu Church on Thursday at 4.00 pm.
