Mangalore, Jun 5: The children of the personnel of the police department of Dakshina Kannada, who have excelled in the academics, sports and extracurricular activities  were honoured on Friday June 4.

Vinay Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte Deemed University and chairman of Lamina Group of Companies, was the chief guest of the programme.

T C Shivashankar Murthy, vice-chancellor, Mangalore University, Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, superintendent of police (SP), Gopal B Hosur, inspector general of police (IGP), and R Ramesh, additional superintendent of police (ASP), were the guests of honour.

Hegde, in his address, said that police personnel are those who have offered their lives to the service of the citizens of the nation.

“A police officer has very little time to look after his child’s progress in education or any other field; so this is the right platform to recognize the progress of the children of the police department and is a prominent event”, he said. Adding further, he said that reservation in schools should be provided to soldiers and children of police officers.

Books were given to the students from police families who scored 90 to 98 percent in academics from Dakshina Kannada. Others students will be similarly rewarded later.

Murthy said that he was happy to come to attend such a great function where children are encouraged to excel. “Education provides physical, social, and cultural development which will make the students responsible citizens of the nation”, he added.

Hosur thanked the additional SP and ASP who worked to make the programme a success. Speaking to the audience, he said that he is proud to be with the police department comprising personnel from deputy superintendent to constables who are very co-operative and tackle problems like communal riots and the recent air crash by spending all their time in support of the citizens of Mangalore.

R Ramesh, additional superintendent of police (ASP) said that the IGP was always open to any plans and projects they initiated and extends a supportive hand.

He said that he was happy that Mangalore is a place where education is given great importance and was thankful to School Book Company for providing books for the programme at a 55 percent discount.

Ramesh added that even in Mysore the maximum discount obtained was 12 percent. He further thanked Karnataka Bank for providing the hall to conduct the programme.

This is a right approach, the family of defense forces, police who often gets deployed 24*7 in combat, field operations and at border zone hardly get time in their family life to look after their childs education, so is the case of our local fishermen and postmans etc..we need to have a comprehensive plan for welfare of these sections (and other deserving sections, including single parents) for the betterment of society
