Mangalore, Jun 9: A team of postgraduate teachers of Mangalore University, who last month randomly checked the results of BBM examinations held in November 2008, came across 200 cases of manipulation of marks, according to sources in the university.
Following this, the university last week constituted a three-member committee of inquiry, headed by a retired judge, to inquire into the matter. The committee was constituted as per the decision of the Syndicate.
Meeting held
The Syndicate, which met on May 29, took serious note of that matter and ordered an inquiry and appropriate action against those involved in it. The committee has to submit its report to the university within a month.
A team of 60 postgraduate teachers last month randomly checked the BBM results for 20 days. To their shock, 200 cases of manipulation of marks were found. Later, the university tabled the findings of the team before the Syndicate.
Sources said that manipulations were found while transferring the marks from A forms to the university ledger.
A forms are those on which evaluators enter the marks and corresponding roll numbers, which the tabulators transfer to the university ledger.
The results are declared based on the details in the university ledger. It is in this process that the marks have been manipulated. It meant that those who had scored less marks had been given more marks during the transfer.
It is suspected that some tabulators and a coordinator for tabulation were involved in the manipulation.
Earlier, the university had found manipulation of marks in the results of LL.B. examination of October-November, 2008. A retired judge had inquired into that case and his report had been tabled before the Syndicate. The latter had directed the university to take appropriate action against the guilty. The process of taking action is now under way, according to sources.
Exam re-scheduled
In another development, the university will be conducting the Business Statistics examination of the fourth semester BBM course again on June 12. This examination was conducted on May 20.
The university has been forced to conduct the examination again because the principal of BTCG College in Somwarpet had conducted the examination in the forenoon instead of afternoon as scheduled.
As a result, approximately 6,000 BBM students under the university have to reappear for the same examination on Saturday, sources said.
Josely T. Lobo, president of the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers, told The Hindu that the university should conduct an inquiry to know how it happened and take action against those responsible.
