Bangalore: Moily Slams Alexander for Remarks on Rajiv Gandhi

Bangalore, Jun 12 (PTI):  Law Minister M Veerappa Moily on Saturday attacked a top aide of Rajiv Gandhi for suggesting that the then prime minister may have had a role in the release of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson accused in Bhopal gas case, saying he was a new convert to BJP-Shiv Sena camp.

"I think he (P C Alexander) had joined BJP, and with Shiv Sena's support he became a Rajya Sabha member. He is a new convert to the BJP-Shiv Sena and anti-Congress camp because he was not considered for Presidentship. It is a motivated statement," he told reporters here.

He said many persons like Alexander, former principal secretary to Rajiv Gandhi, suddenly wanted to be martyrs. "I think he is responsible (for Anderson's sudden release after his arrest in December 1984) because he was the then Principal Secretary," he added.

Union Minister for Law and Justice M Veerappa Moily being felicitated by Jnana Manthana-Karnataka State level CPE conference at Bangalore on Saturday June 12.

Alexander had hinted that Rajiv Gandhi may have had a role in the release of Anderson as the then prime minister could have agreed with the decision on letting him off.

Moily said there was need for a law to fix responsibility on persons responsible for disasters such as the Bhopal gas tragedy.

He said the CBI which investigated the worst ever industrial tragedy that claimed thousands of lives booked cases under IPC section 302, but the supreme court converted it into 304 A (culpable homicide which provides for lesser punishment). "Unfortunately the judiciary did it," he said.

Moily said the Government was working on codifying laws to ensure that disasters were treated as disasters only.

He also said the Government was working on a set of guidelines that would facilitate fast tracking of cases related to major disasters in the light of the Bhopal case.

"Our courts are very conservative. Hence we are working on new set of laws to deal with such disasters", Moily said.

Referring to the case against former chief of Union Carbide Warren Anderson, he said it had not been closed. "We are pursuing it."

When his attention was drawn to Anderson's wife saying that her husband was too old, he said everyone was equal in the eyes of law and age did not matter.

It appears the congress leaders are coming out with statements just to please Sonia. Many of the ministers/leaders have reached such a level becuase of the congress party. If they fight elections individually they are nowhere. Its the same case with Moily.

15000 Dead, we still cannot convict one person. Shame on us. The Media was still under state control then. We talk about genocide communal riots when 10 or 1 are dead. Each life or soul lost is precious to their own dear ones. Imagine how many families destiny would have changed here.
THE fat assed CEO or utives family life will not change if he dies ,since he has enough wealth to last few generations. Its the poor labour class that suffers.
We even make sure our high profile prisoners get good treatment after commiting murders. Bhopal is shame and blotch on this countrry's history . See what BP is going to pay for the gulf oil spill , what did Carbide pay!!!!! did they even face congressional comitees , sure not since our MPs of poor conscience

I don't know why Congress leaders are getting overexcited when it comes to Rajiv Gandhi. After all, Rajiv Gandhi is not a saint and he too has committed mistakes or taken immature decisions. Mr. Moily be realistic, don't be sentimental. Bhopal gas tragedy is not a traffic accident, after all the question of 20,000 human lives!!!

Mr. Moily, it is possible that mr. Rajiv Gandhi, may have had an idea or knowledge of what will happen to Mr. Anderson, why make a hue and cry and blame Mr. Alexander or your present scapegoat Mr. Arjun Singh to please Goddess Sonia Gandhi, mistakes may have happened, graciously accept them and the least you can do is apologise to the nation. Either state govt of MP or Central Govt in Dec 1984, both had congress govt's in place, so you have no one to blame but yourselves.

There may an element of truth in Mr.Alexander's remark. The same thing has been said by Arun Nehru also. The Bhopal Tragedy was one the greatest National disaster. It should not have been swept under the carpet. If same type of tragedy had occurred in U.S.A ,what the U.S.Govt could have done ,just imagine. In our country human lives have got no value.Jai Ho.

It is very sad to here such a comment from our respected Minister Mr. Moily, who advocated for the poor and down throden in the past at Karkala area as young lawyer. The hungry to power made him slave of Gandhi family who advocates even they made such big blunder by allowing The CEO of Union Carbide to flee out of the country with protection from the Government led by the National congress party while thousands of Indian citizens died at Bhopal. This shows how much our political parties are committed to common people interest in the country. These all congress politicians blindly follow Gandhi family as sincere dogs to enjoy the power. Not only congress all other political patries in this country are working for the benifit of commom people all are looking after their interest. If this disaster would have been happened in any other country the punishment for responsible would have been severe and in time. It was a national disaster and all political parties are responsible to provide the justice to the victims. I agree with all commented below that the human values and justice for the poor is par below than any other countries. We feel unlucky to be Indians the way this country managed by selfish, corroupt and dishonest politicians.

Dear Dr.Moily please do not forget that once you are thrown out from the desk of congress spokesman's for your silly statements. Now people are well educated and able to understand the situation.
Its really surprising to learn from you that "Congi's can even sneeze without the permission of Nehru family"

Firstly, Rajiv Gandhi had definitely and intentionally bungled up the situation to please the US. Union Carbide is the owner and profit maker of that company hence it is their duty to compensate the dead and the injured as per the MNC international norms.
Secondly, our judicial system should have taken such a huge tragic disaster in the fast track court and given the judgment within five years and not twenty five years from the date of accident. In India there is no value for human lives and particularly if they happened to be poor. It was very unfortunate that the Govt still defends their leaders who let it go.

First of all why hold warren anderson solely responsible. Where are the actual engineers/contractors/workers who were manning the plant on that day. Were they not responsible directly and what was the punishment meted to them. Today BASF surathkal is leaking deadly gases/polluting the neighbourhood, same with Nagarjuna etc. if a disaster happens there are you going to blame the CEO or someone who is sitting far away and must not be knowing about such things. All NGO's and media make a hue and cry after an incident happens and not as it is happening. And any person who dares to talk about it is ridiculed first.

Moily rightly said, as he needs to show respect for the luxury he had been offered with. that’s very much appreciable.
"We are pursuing it." - Moily boss what are you pursuing? Are you pursuing for more seats under ur belt as to offer for the NRI s? Or is it a joke pursuing after 26 years?
Alexander boss its presumptions off course we do have same as urs. Unfortunately law and order is much controlled by such politicians and we got to be with it over years. Lucky we didn’t have had our family there!

These Congress goons have no pity for the 15000 dead in Bhopal. Only for vote catching they shout about the welfare of the minorities. Is it possible for a arrested person to simply fly out of the country without the governement support? Whom you are fooling, Mr Moily? Have some kind of shame. So many goverment officials and the pilot Mr Ali of MP state have stated the journey of the accused was arranged by then CM. Beware politicians one day people will teach a good lesson never to forget.
