Mangalore: Patrao’s Hunger-strike Steps into Day Seven – Bishop Visits

Daijiworld Media Network – (SR/SB)

Mangalore June 23: As the protest by Gregory Patrao against the forcible acquisition of land for MRPL stepped into day seven, he garnered support from Catholic Sabha as the members of the organization along with Bishop of Mangalore Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza visited the protest site in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Wednesday June 23.

Bishop said, "Helping the people in need and distress is the principle of our religion. Gregory is genuine farmer. District administration has illegally destroyed his house and taken away his belongings in the rainy season without giving chance to appeal to the higher court. I congratulate and bless Catholic Sabha and all organisations which organized the indefinite fast and protest."

Patrao, who has already lost 6.99 acres of land to KIADB and also the 350-year-old ancestral house that are of sentimental value to him. The struggle has also brought in strong support from the farmers of the remaining 2,085 acres of land earmarked to be acquired.

Speaking to Daijiworld, general secretary of Catholic Sabha Godwin Pinto said that he is with Patrao, a hard working farmer and will support him until justice is delivered. He urged that the cases filed against the farmer and his family should be withdrawn immediately. He also demanded compensation from the concerned for the loss suffered by Patrao.

Pinto said that the law-makers should allow Patrao to continue agricultural activities on his 14.27 acres of land until he uses all the options available before him through the law. Status quo should be maintained and agricultural produce as well as other goods valued at Rs 24.65 lac should be returned, immediately, he added.

Walter Pinto president of Catholic Sabha, Fr Onil and Fr William Menezes and large number of leaders of Catholic Sabha from Udupi district and Dakshina Kannada were present.

What i fail to understand is the non showing of the so called "catholic leaders" at Patrao's hunger strike. Where are the leaders? Just because this agitation isnt drawing enough crowds the leaders are not present? Im sure if there were atleast about a 1000 people gathered everyday these leaders woudl have been present. Our catholic leaders with their "Selfish Motive" are useless will only let catholics down. Shame on you "leaders" you guys are not leaders but "actors".

our bishops move is quiet slow. he gives sufficient time to get unnecessary comments from critics. it appears somebody else decides for bishop instead of bishop deciding for others/himself.

Sadly the BJP govt in the state is busy protecting the COWS! It must be also noted that these kind of incidents created Naxals in India and the Govt should take utmost care not to create a void in the hearts of the people and make them lose faith in law and order.

Flatten nice lush green virgin lands and add up to the increasing barron lands. Come on every body, now is the time, reach the pandal and sign up your protest. Let this movement be another "Singroor" of Kanataka. It is immaterial who is the star guest on the stage. Whether it is Patrao OR Parthasarathy is no more relevant. Its the peoples power that should let be known to the political class and the administration.

    Dear Common Man,

Together we are bigger force and can bring down the corrupt politicians and industrialists. Remember the Jessica Lal case and ongoing Ruchika - Rathore case where the common man has fought alongside the victim for justice. Unless we raise our voices all the fertile land will disappear and there will only be a concrete jungle. I cannot understand why Indian Govt. is not developing Bihar, UP, and our Country. Awaken people before it is too late. Today, it is Mr. Patrao's case 2moro it may be You.

It will be a right thing if the Catholic Bishop joins hands with Pejawar Swamiji to protect the livelihood of farmers and save the fertile lands, lakhs of trees, plants and crores of living organisms from destruction because of SEZ. Any spirtual leader should take this as a responsibility. SEZ can move to any arid region but the rape of nature cannot be reversed. A farmer without land is like a computer engineer without computer, electrical engineer without electricity or a carpenter without wood. He is helpless, frustrated, and useless to the society.May the Bishop join hands with Swamiji

There must be some justification for taking away his land, you need to compensate him, in the name of development you cannot take away poor people's land.

It is indeed a terrible feeling to see the face of Sri.Gergory Patrao and his family members. The miserable look on their faces is of pain and the ignominous hurt they are facing apart from great loss. It is the duty of those in power and all who hold power and are ruling this land of Rama, Buddha and Gandhi to see that satya prevails and due remeady is provided to this harassed family of the soil immediately. All law abiding citizens must support and further this cause to the optimum.

Bishop's solidarity with Patrao came bit of late as Kemaru Swamiji from the begning associated with him. As our Daiji readers used to ask why there was no association of church top officials with issue of Mr Patrao was answered finally. Hope for an logic/happy ending.
