Mangaluru: Customs officials seize gold worth Rs 31.73 lac from Dubai returnee

Mangaluru, Feb 6: Customs officials at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) on Saturday February 6, arrested one passenger for carrying gold by way of concealment in body.

The arrested is identified as Mohammed Harshad hailing from Bengre Kasaba here, had arrived from Dubai to MIA on Air India flight IX 1814. The said passenger was identified by way of profiling and further questioning. Gold in powder form mixed with gum, of 664 grams valued at Rs 31,73,920 was seized.

The Customs team was led by Praveen Kandi IRS, deputy commissioner and assisted by officers Naresh Kumar BM, superintendent, Bikram Chakraborty, superintendent, and others.

    Readers, gold smuggling has certainly turned into a lucrative, chronic pandemic, afflicting just one section of our society.... These law breakers, are conscious, that they are financially bleeding India, yet they deliberately indulge with gay abandon, to willfully violate the laws of our Republic !!!!

    So why to place restrictions heavy duty on gold ? Is gold a narcotic substance or causes harm to the body ? Lower the duty to 5pct, remove the quantity restrictions and all smuggling will stop. Why don't you suggest this to be your BJP colleagues ?

    Why cannot the big fish be caught, because these chaps are only engaged to do a job. These carriers are paid handsomely. Some get caught and some are scot free.
