Ombudsman's Resignation Clouds BJP Government's Anniversary Fete

Ombudsman's Resignation Clouds BJP Government's Anniversary Fete

Bangalore, June 24 (IANS) The resignation of Karnataka's anti-corruption panel head has chipped away some sheen off a grand function planned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to mark its two years in office Friday.

The Lok Ayukta (anti-corruption panel head) N. Santosh Hegde quit a year ahead of the end of his five-year term saying he was frustrated at government's indifference to this constitutional body set up to curb corruption in bureaucracy.

Political parties, advocates in several parts of Karnataka and many organizations Thursday flayed the government for its non-cooperation with the Lok Ayukta and urged Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to reject Hegde's resignation.

Hegde, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, was scathing in his attack on the government of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is organizing the 'Sadhana Samavesha' to celebrate his two years in office.

He took over as BJP's first chief minister in Karnataka and south India in May 2008.

Hegde, appointed to the post in August 2006, submitted his resignation to Bhardwaj Wednesday evening requesting that it be accepted with effect from Aug 31. Hegde said he wanted to give time to the government to appoint his successor before leaving as otherwise the post becomes defunct without an incumbent.

Lawyers in Haveri in north Karnataka and Ramanagara on Bangalore outskirts stayed away from court proceedings Thursday protesting government's indifference to the Lok Ayukta. They demanded Hegde to take back his resignation or governor to reject it.

Pro-Kannada groups, farmers' organizations, Dalit groups besides opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular parties also came out in support of Hegde.

While pro-Kannada groups demonstrated in Bangalore and Mysore, former legislator and president of Karnataka Raitha Sangha (farmers' organization) K. S. Puttannaiah held a press conference in Mysore urging government to meet Lok Ayukta's demand for more powers to protect his officers and deal with the corrupt.

Lawyers in Bangalore held a meeting to decide what action to take to make Hegde continue as Lok Ayukta.

Former prime minister and JD-S president H.D. Deve Gowda, his son and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, another son and leader of the party in the assembly H.D. Revanna, Congress state president R.V. Deshpande and several other party leaders held separate press meets or issued statements blaming Yeddyurappa regime for Hegde's quit decision.

Hegde's resignation is one more embarrassment for both Yeddyurappa and the BJP ahead of the 'Sadhana Samavesha' where the party hopes to gather over 50,000 people from across the state to laud his government's 'achievements' in the last two years.

Along with the turbulent journey, fortune has been favouring Yeddyurappa and BJP, so far. The party has managed to bag majority of seats in all the elections, Lok Sabha, several by-polls to the assembly and the legislative council and the Bangalore civic body, held after it came to power two years back.

"These election results show that people are with us. Let the opposition say what they want," Yeddyurappa asserts.

The allegation of Hegde is baseless. Did he not knew about the corruption all these years in office about the corruption. Now since his terms is getting over and just before five years completition realised about the corruption?? why? why?? This tactics is to get free publicity and get an entry to politics. And why this hue and cry by the people. Can you just name a political party in power who are not corrupted? What is so special about BJP being corrupted in Karnataka. We the people of democratic India live with corruption. What Hegde is trying to preach by his action, being an ex-judge of the supreme court he should be knowing better where all the corruption in India exists. Well guys this is all drama and people are just being fooled and mockery about our constitution. I can read hegde's face, he is least bothered about corruption in Karnataka but he is now bothered about his term being coming to an end at the Lokayukta.

Fun was Mr. R.V. Deshpande blaming the govt. The person himself has fooled the people of Karnataka by miss using the flood relief fund. Justice Hegde is a good person, tried very hard to improve the system. However there are few instances where prompt officers were booked (with conspiracy from opposition party MLAs). I personally have experienced this. One of my relative who was ex Airforce service (very honest and prompt) was Thahashildar at a taluk head quarters. He was forcefully made to hold the cash (in the early morning by knocking the door and forcing the cash into hands) by the sand mafia gang since the officer was not allowing illegal transport. Lokayuktha without investigating the incident and the history of the officer suspended him.

When on rules by just and equality, the government would sure to prevail. Lokayukta was formed to curtail orruption and Justice Hegde and his predecessor Justice Venkatachala were extremely good in their job. JDS CM HDK didnt want justie Venkatachala to continue, now Yeddi too doesnt like Justice Hedges style of functioning. The government or ruler who support corruption is sure to bite dust. BJP has an advantage by the resignation of Justice Hegde, but it is short term and in the long run the repurcussions are negative and damaging to BJP. Better Yeddi listens to Justice Hegde and requests him to continue as Head of Lokayukta and give him a free hand in the best interest of our state and in the welfare of people of karnataka.

To save from public wrath the best possible way for BJP is persuation of Justice Hegde to withdraw the resignation and fulfilling of his just demands put forward to Govt.

BJP did a blunder in inviting Lokyakuta's resignation on the eve of Sadhana Samevesha and session of Assembly.Certainly this issue is a tool for opposition parties to take BJP Govt for an task.If today's SADHANA SAMEVASHA gives an positive message to 6 crore citizens of Karnataka with regarding issue of Lokayukta resignation that would be really a ASADHARANA WADA SADHANE OF BJP under the circmstances.

    Folks,

This cannot be a good news to BJP in long run....

Palemar is last straw on camels(Justice Hegde's)back...

Boppanna did the same before with Sampangi case...

Nagesh, you think this is good day for you, you are wrong in this, in short run may be yes, but read my lips..., this cannot be good to you or BJP in long run....

For a honest person like Santosh Hegde, remaining in or out of power does not make much difference...for corrupt(Vidhvans???), it makes lot of difference...thats why they lick(What???!!!).

Justice Nitte Santhosh Hedge's resignation as Lokayukta Karnataka has exposed the fact that people of the state WANT Lokayukta and Ruling party /Opposition party DOES NOT require Lokayukta. It is clear from the aftermath
Lokayukta's intention to resign. The heat generated in public is not seen in political circles indicates that people in the Government/Opposition are at relief over the incident.Whatever said by people in politics is only a lip service. In short they are wedded to the corruption.
Yeddyurappa has great role to play here.He should make an intorospection first on his rise and reach to CM's post.People have seen him as a great fighter since decades. He him self would not have drempt that one day he will occupy the chair now he sits. There is no doubt that he is responsible for the installation BJP government of South India for the first time. His outburst against the HDK's JDS and BJP coilation government when BJP denied chance power at the end of agreed term is memorable. He was a roaring lion then againt the injustice. When such is the history, come on Yeddyurappa ! prevail on the situation and consider the request of the Lokayukta in toto and respect 6 crore Kannadiga's wish.Let us have Justice Santhosh Hegde as Lokayukta for his full term and stand by him to accomplish the task. You will be remembered for long for your bold and historic decision.
