Mangalore, Jun 26: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), V Ponnuraj, has instructed the officials of the survey department to take steps to evict illegal encroachments on government land to an extent of 3.7 acres spread over seven survey numbers between Krishnapura Cross Road and Chokkabettu Junction near Suratkal. He was on a visit to the area on Friday June 25.

Spot inspection by the deputy commissioner had been arranged in response to complaints of encroachment of government land on this stretch. The complainants had pointed out that these lands had been acquired by the government 37 years ago for road widening purpose and compensation had been paid to the respective land owners. Successive governments had failed to do the needful.

The officials measured the areas and found that the complaints were genuine. Local corporator, Hrish K, said that some of those who have encroached upon the government land are leading personalities and that there are complaints that the width of the proposed concrete road on this stretch is being compromised to facilitate them. He urged the local people to cooperate with the authorities in clearing illegal encroachments.

Survey department’s district deputy director, Kusumadhar Gowda, city corporation assistant executive engineer, Gopal gowda, revenue inspector, Pushparaj Shetty, town planning officer of the corporation, Balakrishna Gowda, and several others accompanied the DC.

The deputy commissioner also instructed the officials to take steps to protect about eight acres of government land lying near Janata Colony and Krishnapura seventh block, to ensure that they are not encroached upon in future.
