Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Feb 10: The health department here has to sent swabs of over 200 students from Kerala to Bengaluru, after they tested positive for coronavirus, to determine if they carry the new strain of the virus.

More than 200 students from Kerala who had come to answer exams have tested positive for coronavirus in the last one month. The health department officials have sent their swab samples to NIMHANS in Bengaluru for gene sequencing to find out whether any of them carried the new strain of the virus.

Since the discovery of the new strain of coronavirus in the UK towards the end of 2020, several people have returned to India from there. People from Kerala also tested positive for the new strain of the virus. Hence, as precautionary measures, the officials will send swabs to NIMHANS.

Speaking to Daijiworld, DHO Ramachandra Bayari said, "Samples will be sent to NIMHANS for genotyping to trace whether it is a new strain of the virus. This is being done especially after several students from Kerala tested positive for Covid-19."

At present, people coming from Kerala are being subjected to checks at district border. Students coming from Kerala are required to mandatorily produce RTPCR negative report while attending schools and colleges in the district.

Tests are also being conducted in colleges where there are students from Kerala. Those who travel via bus from Kerala to Dakshina Kannada need to undergo tests every 15 days. Though travel has not been restricted yet, precautionary measures are being taken to control the spread of the virus in Dakshina Kannada.

On Tuesday February 9, the district recorded 29 new cases of coronavirus. So far, 34,074 positive cases have been reported in the district, out of which 343 are currently active.

Its easy to make outsiders the scapegoat and point fingers at them. Hardly anyone wears mask in Mangalore these days, forget social distancing. Looks like no one in DK cares about Corona anymore. Hope our negligence won't bring back the horrors of 2020.

Additionally, WHO has also been monitoring two additional Covid-19 strains that are actively spreading: B.1.351, initially seen in South Africa and the P.1 strain that was first identified in Brazil, CNN reported. As of February 7, the B.1.351 strain has been reported in 44 countries, while the P.1 strain has been reported in 15 nations, WHO says. Scientists are not surprised to see the Covid-19 virus changing and evolving but they fear that a variant could mutate to the point that it causes more severe disease, bypasses the ability of tests to detect it or evades the protection provided by vaccination, the report said.

Whether to believe or not, Corona is becoming Money making Bussiness. 1. Few months back it was such a Panic in Citizens that Health Officials of City were grabbing 2 wheeler Raiders for not wearing Mask while a MLA was walking towards His vehicle without Mask in front of this same Official but not stopped with fine. 2. Covid Rules came saying Social Distance is very important and controlled Social gathering to 20 people for Funeral- -50 people for Wedding --no Schools and on and on stupid Rules around. But now all City Busses are carrying 75 plus packed Passengers including Health Staff such as Asha Workers,Nurses,Hospital Staff Plus Medical Students from Colleges. Oh! My God what a scene. 3. Recently they declared Srinivas College in Valachil with Corona but Students still stand in groups near the gate of college. They also gethered in Hotels nearby college. 4. Every morning Buses coming towards Neermarga packed with Students of area colleges are breathing everyones Corona Breath. Buses are so packed that Students are hanging on foot Boards as Bus tilts one side. Spoke to few Health Officials but nothing happened. Now they found only Kerala Students with Virus but DK Students are Immune of Corona. Who is fooling Who?

WHO recognises ’concerning news’ of COVID-19 vaccines not working against variants Mangalore Today News Network / Yahoo New Delhi, Feb 09, 2021: The head of the World Health Organization said Monday the emergence of new COVID-19 variants has raised questions about whether or not existing vaccines will work, calling it "concerning news" that the vaccines developed so far may be less effective against the variant first detected in South Africa. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a media briefing that South Africa’s decision on Sunday to suspend its vaccination campaign using the AstraZeneca vaccine is "a reminder that we need to do everything we can to reduce circulation of the virus with proven public health measures."

Kbr ji, you are absolutely right. I don't understand why these officials and educational institutions are in a hurry to conduct offline classes !! They could have conducted through online itself. To my utter surprise, no student is wearing mask outside the campus, roads, buses etc. What is the situation inside the classroom as well as in the campus and during free time? Where's the school /college authorities? When everywhere corona is in rise, I feel health department s of Karnataka/dk are not giving appropriate numbers....
