Karnataka Legislature Houses Mourn Deaths of Mangalore AI Crash, Shekavat

Bangalore, June 28: Cutting across party lines, both houses of Karnataka Legislature on Monday condoled demise of former vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, one sitting member of state assemblhy, four former members, one former Rajya Sabha member and 158 Air India Express passengers at Bajpe international airport in Mangalore .
Four other social activists and journalists. Surendra Dani, Subraya Narayan Mallya, writer Manohar Malagaokar and Maha Prajnajee, who propagated non-violence by walking over a lakh miles across the country were also mourned.
In the assembly, the obituary reference was moved Speaker K G Bhopaiah and supported by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurapp and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah.
In the Upper House, acting chairman Puttanna moved the obituary reference, which was supported Congress opposition leader Motamma.
After members cutting across party lines in both the houses expressed their condolences to the deceased leaders and the victims of the Air India Express boeing at Bajpe airport in Mangalore and observed a minute’s silence, the two houses adjourned the sittings without transacting any business as a mark of respect.
The Chief Minister B S Yeddyurapa eulogised the contributions, service and achievements of Shekhawat (1923-2010), who had spent five decades in public life, served in various positions, including Chief Minister of Rajasthan and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Shekawat had maintained good relations with all leaders of the BJP and implemented several pro-poor policies in Rajasthan. He was the Chief Minister from 1977-1980, 1990-92 and 1993-98.
Siddaramaiah, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S Suresh Kumar, V Srinivasa Prasad (Congress) noted the successful implementation of the Anthyodaya programme by Shekhawat for the upliftment of the poor. Shekhawat, who began his career as the police inspector, held several positions during the 50 years of political life, they said.
The Chief Minister and other members also recalled the contributions of Chandrashekar Patil Revur, who was elected to the present Assembly from the Gulbarga South, to the people and the party. Revur, two-time MLA, died on April 14.
Yeddyurappa, Siddaramaiah, Ministers Jagadish Shettar, Revu Naik Belamagi, Govind Karjol, Suresh Kumar, H D Revanna (JD-S), Qmarul Islam, K Abhayachandra Jain and U T Khadar (all Congress) recalled the contributions of former MLAs Hanumantha Rao, C Andanappa, A Dodde Gowda, former Rajya Sabha member Nanaji Deshmukh, journalists Surendra Dani, Subraya Narayan Mallya, writer Manohar Malagaokar, Maha Prajnajee, who propagated non-violence by walking over a one lakh miles across the country.
They condoled the death of air passengers at Bajpe airport and buspassengers at Challakere in Chitradurga district. The House observed a minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
In the Council, acting Chairman Puttanna moved the condolence resolution, which was supported by leader of the house and home minister Dr V S Acharya, Congress leader Motamma, JD(S) leader M C Nanaiah and members from the ruling and opposition parties.
