Mangaluru: Female staff allege harassment from officers in MCC

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Feb 26: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) made news yet again following the allegations of mental harassment by female staff. A complaint in this regard has been also lodged in the department of women and child welfare.

Staff with an educational background from SSLC to IAS and a salary ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 1 lac per month are employed at the MCC office. There are also those who work on a contract basis and are paid only Rs 12,000 monthly. Most of the employees hold undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The discrimination in the distribution of work between the contract workers earning Rs 12,000 and the arrogance of engineers and full-time officers is reportedly giving rise to issues.

The workers working on a contract basis are allotted more work than they are liable to do. The women who are employed on contractual basis in some of the engineering departments work till 8 pm, which happens to be in direct violation of Supreme Court guidelines.

Contract workers are essential for technical and skilled labour. However, they are being burdened with additional work and allegedly face mental harassment. One such case is of Shashikala DS who has been working on a contract basis for the last 15 years. She lodged a complaint with the department of women and child welfare alleging harassment. A copy of her complaint against corporation superintendent engineer R Ganeshan and assistant executive engineer in the water supply division, Naresh Shenoy has been made available to the media.

It is said that there were complaints against R Ganeshan in the past as well. Two of the female employees who were hired on a contract basis Vidya and Divya quit due to harassment. Engineer Ganeshan has been accused of hurling abuses to subordinates in front of other staff, disrespecting and mocking their educational qualifications.

Shashikala in her complaint stated that Naresh Shenoy and another engineer is supportive of Ganeshan's antics and demanded that justice be served regardless of the post of the accused.

Authority has to take immediate action against the Person concerned and suspend him with immediate effect. Strict action to be taken against all the culprit in this regard without fail and let them understand how to behave with the supporting/subordinating staff. Understand them that only qualification and having higher post is not the licecnce for them to misbehave with the staff working under them.

Harassments' ? As long it is not sexual harassment it is fine .Work related pressure is a universal phenomenon ,If you are not delivering efficiently as per the job requirement ,you might find it difficult these days to survive ,and that does account as "Harassment"

going by the name of the stupid suptd engineer i think he is a Konga from tamilnadu These tamilians have lot of ego about their knowledge and qualifications..That is why he must have been harassing hapless females. Should be given chappali pooja.. But our mlore saffron gangs will not raise any noise about this as BJP is ruling in MCC and also for the fact that some members of the saffron brigade must be having good contracts with MCC and earning handsomely.

Good Job by these Employees. These Employees are treated like second class workers. I have raised this issue with past commissioner and he did nothing. Why there should be contract system. One reason may be to swindle money in their nme by Contractor who supply these workers. Elected Corrupt People also have hand in it. I have heard the sad stories from these sad workers for the past few years. Contractors call these workers at eight o'clock at night at Home and tell them that they are terminated because more workers are there in Office. The reason may be as per one employee who Cried and told me that they hire new one and collect commission per person. May be part of commission goes to crooks elected and higher officials. Another Employee at Property Card office told me when I went to collect Documents that the lady who is supposed to hand over the Documents is Terminated previous night and my work was delayed as I did not know who is handling my papers. This horrible stories are happening in Mini Vidhana Complex too. Best thing is these Poor employees should contact Lokayukta or ACB group to investigate. Good Luck to all contract workers. MLA worried about People jumping of Nethravathi bridge but not about cruelty to workers in MCC Complex

This is not new at all. There are numerous stories on how badly the contract workers are treated in govt offices. The contract workers are dumped with everyone's work and are paid a paltry salary. I had recently interviewed a candidate working as a contract worked in the Udupi rto and was shocked to learn that she was paid 6 thousand a month even after 4 years of service. The govt departments dont even heed to the minimum pay structure nor have basic respect towards contact workers. This issue has to be addressed seriously and urgently.

Such problems we hear almost everywhere.People who have to work on contract basis are loaded with more work than their position and hours. They do work out of fear of loosing jobs.and their chief make use of this and let them under mental stress. This is not good.Last people who are under stress get sick and may tend to end their life. Please mangalore corp.committee dont let this on you.Be a bit human and think they too are like you, have to feed their family. When nothing works ,I would advice people go elsewhere , where mental peace is there When pay scale is less ,dont worry.God will help you sometime. Why cant they go to a lawyer who can settle things better than only work under pressure.Dont you have a union?
