Bangalore: CM Agrees to Empower Lokayuka - CM, Ministers, MLAs, Spared

Bangalore, Jul 10: During his reply to the debate on illegal mining on Friday July 9, Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, announced that the government has taken a decision to vest additional powers to the Lokayukta as per his demand. The ten-point formula worked out by the government has received the cabinet nod, he disclosed.

The government has now given the Lokayukta and the Upa Lokayukta, powers to take suo motu action against corrupt officials. While they can act on the basis of complaints on deficiency of service or public complaint, they have to mention reasons for taking action before moving against the concerned suo motu, he said.

While the posts of the state chief secretary, additional chief secretary and principal secretary have been brought under the ambit of the Lokayukta, Chief Minister, ministers, members of the legislature, and public servants nominated by the government will remain off limits for the Lokayukta institution.

As per the new policy, whenever the post of the Upa Lokayukta is vacant, the Lokayukta can use the former’s powers. The government also has agreed to vest the powers in case of those victims of corruption who are rendered unable to file a complaint, or in case they are unable to follow up their complaint, to pursue the complaint, with their heirs.

The Chief Minister announced that the vacant post of Upa Lokayukta will be filled within a week. The Chief Minister also said that the demand for additional staff to the Lokayukta has been met with the posting of 29 additional employees to it.

In normal course, the Lokayukta has powers to move against those whose income is Rs 20,000and above, whereas the people having less income than that limit fall under the purview of the Upa Lokayukta.

    I agree with the comments of Keshav and Mathew. We have to blame the political system, we belong.That's not just enough, we have to blame ourself. How many of us have voted un-biased, with out considering the caste,creed etc ? Hupocracy and nepotism has birth deep inside us. Unless otherwise we destroy this menace, the blame-game is on forever, with no solution.

    You are right. If atall today naxalisum is spreading in India its only becuase of our politicians,who devides the people, devides the caste and amaze wealth for their families and cheals at the cost of poor people.They impliment policy for rural people and pocket the money.Why there is no naxalisum in other parts of the world only in Nepal and India. Bothe countries politicians are of same looters.

    This is a bad precedent Mr. C.M, Pl stop the corruption from the top and otherwise the MLA, Ministers will take the hefty money for every government officer or staff’s ion, transfer, promotion & etc. Then do not blame the poor officer or staff for the act of bribery. This is nothing but I can eat & loot, however others are deprived from doing so. Be Sincere in deeds or else it will be crocodile tears

    Mr. Sadananda and all those who blame BJP for not giving full power to Lokayuktha, I would like to ask you one question. When was Lokayuktha came into existence? It was certainly not in last two years right? Then why these opposition party who were in power before did not try giving rights to Lokayuktha? Do you guys understand what I mean? None of the politicians (party no bar) wants the Lokayuktha to have complete power. So, please stop blaming BJP govt for it. Blame the entire political system rather.

    This is the biggest mockery one can see. With this i understand that the CM and his ministers can never be corrupt or even they are corrupt nobody can ever question.
    This is the difference between India, Nigeria, Burma, Pak all the currupt (developing countries) to the Developed countries. Open and public corruption but you can't do nothing. The CM is saying we politicians are out of bound. We can loot, murder and get away. The police and all the force is to protect me and my family. Nobody can question us. The public is our servant. We are God's.

    What a statement from you. What is the difference between the CM, MLA's MLC's and Ministers and the people of Karnataka? Do you feel justified by sparing these guys from Lokayukta?     Dear friends,

    "Saamp bhi marrey, aur laati bhi naa toote" This is the best way one can describe the compromise between BJP and Lokayakta. The top most on the agenda of the Chief Minister was to protect "Reddy Brothers" which he has successfully achieved by carving out Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs and MLCs etc from the Lokayukta net. If anyone is left out in the Reddy camp, he will be given a ticket for MLA/MLC. In the process, he also believes that he has regained(???) the lost confidence of the people by bringing the Lokayukta back. By accepting this compromise, the Lokayukta, who in his dramatic resignation and subsequent withdrawal, pretended to be the unbiased clean face of the Institution of accountability, himself has certainly lost all his credibility. He is now clearly part of the Reddy-CM Enterprise. It is sad that being the Son of Late Kowdoor Sadananda Hegde (my village mate), the Lokayukta diluted his stand for purely political reasons. Both opposition & ruling party united in blocking empowering of Lokayukta with power for suo moto action (god knows what is the limit on so called suo moto action). Democracy demands justice and this can be only realised when people are held responsible for their corrupt practices irrespective of office or post held by them.     This is ridiculous! Very disappointing! If the main culprits are left out of the purview of Lokayukta, what is the fun in the whole game? First, all the elected members should be brought under the purview of the Lokayukta . Obviously, Hegdeji seems to be very unhappy. Now he is caught in the spin! This is politics Sir!!
