Mangalore: Roman and Catherine School for the Blind Inaugurated in City

Mangalore, Jul 12: ‘Roman and Catherine School for the Blind’ , a full-fledged school for the visually impaired children of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and surrounding districts was inaugurated at Kapikad, Bejai here on Monday July 12.

The school has been a dream of Dr U V Shenoy, Seva Bharathi Trust for the last two decades. The credit of the project should also go to Carmine Lobo. It is due to her relentless efforts the Seva Bharathi decided to support and provide opportunities to the blind.

The Seva Bharathi under the guidance of Dr U V Shenoy has already engaged itself in supporting the mentally challenged children through Chetana Child Development Centre at V T Road.

In the school, the formal education will be taught as per the Karnataka Education Board syllabus. Along with this, computer education and computer skills will be taught using the most popular screen reading / talking software known as JAWS. For the partially visual impaired, computer applications will be taught using the screen magnification software. The other informal methods of education will include orientation and mobility, independent living, handicrafts, special games like cricket, chess and so on. The medical facilities of the student, if necessary will be taken care by the school with the total consent of parents or guardian of the student. The parent or guardian will be contacted by the school authorities in person or by telephone.

The aim is to impart first to seventh standard education in Braille (a script used for reading and writing by visually impaired which will include subjects like English, Kannada, Hindi, science, mathematics, social studies, physical education and moral education. When a student completes seventh standard, he or she will be admitted to a High School.

The long-term goal of the school is to make the visually challenged stand on their own feet and open to them the wide doors of knowledge based society and create opportunities for them in the hope that they will play a role in nation building.
